posticon Back-up!

Tonight's events reminded me again of the need for independent backups. So I thought I might as well list what I do - and please add your favourite way of backing up your files.

1. I use a key drive / usb stick onto which I backup files semi-regularly. I carry this stick on my most of the day.

2. I use my gmail account. I don't do this regularly enough, but with bigger stuff, I send myself email and add the file as attachment. They'll keep it safe for me.

3. I still have an old zip drive and more media than I need. So, I used to back up on that drive as well, and put the disk into a drawer at work. This is a method I should (and will) revive.

I believe it's a good idea to keep one copy of files in a location different from your home. (And that may even be the computer of a trusted friend.)

I have three computers I store all of my writing on. Plus, I burn CDs every couple of months to back up all of my documents.

My harddisk is partitioned into C:/ and D:/ drives, Windows is on C:/, all my documents are on D:/
If I need to reinstall windows I can format C:/, load windows and still have all my documents on D:/

I also use my gmail account to backup my important documents.

WIPs also get a backup on my usb and my iPod, can't be too carefull when that essay is due in only a couple of days emoticon

I write all of My Documents (and a few other things) to a CD on a semi-regular basis. When I remember, I take a CD round to a friend's house for safe keeping.

I don't really cut CDs as often as I should, but I also have the most recent copy of all the documents I'm currently using on my USB memory stick in my pocket. So overall I'm pretty well covered. When my computer died last week ( emoticon ) I had every document I've ever written either on last month's CD or on the memory stick.

I also have a complete backup of my Web site on.... my Web site emoticon

Sorry to hear about your computer, David. And yet, I'm glad you got everything backed up.

I have my stuff on two separate computers and my flash drive. I also tend to print off a paper copy of everything I write. That way if all the computers are fried, I'll still have a hard copy emoticon

(Of course, the paper method may not work once my manuscript get thicker) emoticon

Well it is good to know everyone at least tries to occasionally to keep there data safe. If only computers had a more certain way of keeping data safe, maybe the flash hard drives or so will help...
