"Dragon Court" - the story of a book

This is the third book in the Cloud Lands Saga.

It's been difficult to write this one. First, my two main characters separate in an event after Kraken War, and I finally realized I needed to put the story into two different books.

"Dragon Court" is about Orlen and what happens at Court after Kraken War. He struggles to stay Crown Prince and having a dragon - which is against the law.

Dorelle deserts again fairly early in the book, leaving Orlen behind to save another dragon and rider. It breaks her heart, but she can't let them die. So I took her story out and that will be part 4, "Betrayal".

I finished writing "Dragon Court" in summer and then asked Beta Readers for their help. And then I went into massive block about editing it. I missed my own deadline, and only managed to get it done with the help of a deadline by my publishing partners. Of course, that deadline is a bit of a joke, but it helps both of us to plan - and it gets me moving.

I finally sent it off mid-September. And yesterday, I saw the cover. It's awesome. I like it much better than the one of "Kraken War". emoticon

Later today, we'll upload the files, and then do the official release tomorrow. It takes up to 24h for Amazon to offer the ebook, and for the print to distribute to their servers.

I'm very excited about it. emoticon

Thanks!

Release is one day delayed... my publishing partner got sick. So we'll upload today, and release tomorrow.

Here's a sneak preview of the cover:

Thanks!

"Dragon Court" is live as ebook on Amazon now, which feels great. I also just approved the print version, so that'll come up soon. I hope in time for sunrise in the US. Then Amazon has to understand there are two versions of it, and put them together. Usually they are good at this, too.

 emoticon

It's not yet listed on my Author page, because I had to add it there manually, and it takes another 24h to be up there for sure. Usually, they are faster.

I'm very happy and proud. emoticon

So.

I sold all of three copies on Release Day. Two of them to fans who told me about in on FB (which is great PR!).

And honestly, that number is a disappointment. emoticon

In addition, a person in Canada is reading through my series on Kindle Unlimited. That is cool, and I really hope he or she will tell friends about it. In a good way.

I still have to push my promo, write a blog post and send out the newsletter to my tiny email list. I hope to sell a few more copies today.

Thing is, I need to sell about 200 copies to break even with the investment into creating the book. (Not counting any KU revenue in there, nor any print sales.)

Next steps: Growing my email list, growing my fan base and hoping for plain dumb luck in getting noticed.

Wish me luck. emoticon

Let me know if there are any links you'd like me to add or remove from that thread.

Funny thing happening: I'm getting more readers through Kindle Unlimited. Which is cool - it's good for my sales rank. And I'm earning about the same on a borrow as on a sale.

I also sold a copy of "Dorelle's Journey" yesterday. This may be the result of a tweet I sent, telling people that this is the book where it all begins. emoticon

So I'm not really selling more of my new release, but I'm still selling *something*.

Which is nice.

And of course, I always hope it'll build...

Cool. Several Indie Authors have stated that it can take up to ten books before you see any real progress, so maybe you're just on a slow build which will increase once you get a number of works out there.

My sister was telling me I should stop thinking about getting a Kindle and get it. emoticon She was telling me about Kindle Unlimited. Said it would save me money on books. I could read them first, and then just buy the ones I really liked.

I do waste money on books, only to find out they weren't worth getting. emoticon emoticon

So ... I guess it's time. Now just to figure out which one. emoticon

I love my Kindle. emoticon

Before you pay for Kindle Unlimited: Look at the books that interest you and check if they are actually IN the program. I find that many expensive non-fiction books that I'm interested in are not.

In my opinion, KU is something mostly indie authors use - since with the kind of price indie authors charge, a borrow brings in about the same kind of money. Trad publishers have opted to charge much more for ebooks (on average), and they would lose money through KU. Of course, they are losing market share because of those prices...

In KU, you can borrow ten books at any given time for free. If you want to borrow an eleventh, you have to return one of the ten first.

I think she said she had Amazon Prime? emoticon I'm new to this Amazon/Kindle thing so, I'm not sure what the difference is.

I haven't checked out the different Kindles yet to see which one I should go with. Maybe I'll treat myself for Christmas. emoticon

Amazon Prime is something else. With Amazon Prime, you get free and/or faster shipping, unlimited video and music streaming, photo storage, and access to the Kindle Owners Lending Library - with one book per month, iirc. I think authors get a token bonus if a book is borrowed, but I'm not sure. Prime costs $99 per year.

Kindle Unlimited is more like a library pass. That's the one with unlimited borrowing (from those books are are listed in KU), and a max of ten books at the same time. Authors are compensated per page read in this set-up, and it shows in our reports. There are more books in KU than in the Owners Lending Library. KU costs $10 per month.

Hope that helps. emoticon emoticon emoticon

PS: My books are in both systems. (With the exception of "Here be Dragons") emoticon

Yeah. She has Prime. She told me it was $99 a year. I'll just have to check them both out and see which I want.

Well, my KU reads are exploding, and not just for "Dragon Court". In fact, people are reading the entire series - and do so quickly.

That makes me very happy. It means the books are attractive enough to want to keep reading, and KU makes it totally easy for readers. One even checked out (and read) my old short story "Sequoia".

It'll be interesting to see how much payout I'll get for this month. It's ~ 0.5 ct per page, but I'm up to 2k page reads already.

I'm definitely putting an emphasis on KU in my marketing now. And I'm glad I have five out of six books in it.
