Awesome Article on the Writing Process

I stumbled over this because of a comment on a blog I love. And I fell in love with this blog post, too. It's very much like I write.

Dean Wesly Smith describes his way of writing - and this man is highly productive. It's a good thing to imitate, I believe.

I thought I had to write from beginning to end, as well. I lost a lot of stuff because I refused to write it before I got to it within the story. emoticon

Re: Awesome Article on the Writing Process

When I started out, I began writing from the beginning.

And then scenes crowded me, and I wrote them down and then figured out a way to connect them. I still have files with some weird scenes in them. (That German fantasy series I never finished... part 5 only consists of some scenes)

I'm back to writing in a more linear fashion now, but I do what Dean does - loop back, edit, jump to the end again, write, find something to fix, loop back .... It works for me, and I have given myself permission to write any which way.

So yes, do write those scenes. Don't let them wither away and die.

Some writing information I've read stated never edit until the first draft is done. That editing as you wrote the first draft would prevent you from ever finishing it. You would keep editing over and over and never create new stuff and get finished.

Maybe that is true for some writers, but not for all writers. emoticon

I actually think that's horrible advice.

Yes, maybe some people loose themselves in editing. I have a feeling those are not going to be good writers in the long run, anyway, though, because they will have a lot of trouble letting a story go and publish it.

Personally, I think you should always fix typos right away. And there is no better start for me than to go over the last scene, fix a few things and then segue into writing new stuff.

I have been told that I create very clean "first drafts". Except they are not really first drafts, because I clean them up while writing.

And seriously? How often do you want to rewrite a story because you keep moving from draft 1 to draft 2 to draft 3 - always retyping and reworking it? That takes WAY too long.

Even as pantser, I can be faster when I edit while I write, by looping back and integrating editing into my creative process.

I've always edited when I don't have ideas for new stuff. Sometimes new ideas can come out of editing. For me, anyways. I guess everyone should take the 'rules' with a grain of salt and follow their gut. emoticon

I write from beginning to end, but pop back and add or change stuff as it comes to me. I'd forget all the changes otherwise.

Trying, so do I. I'm always annoyed when I can't get to a story right away when I have a great idea for an edit.

I'm also ready a book on plotting right now... so tempting to try that.

I really want to be able to write stories FAST.
