Asimov Heirs have Trouble with Agent
So yeah. It's not easy to find an agent, and it's even harder to find a good one. And it seems that getting rid of a bad one might also be a problem.
Sci-fi icon Isaac Asimov relatives sue literary agent
I'm kind of glad I could easily ditch that agent who never landed me a deal. They were not even able to tell me exactly which publisher had received my manuscript when. It took them months to respond to the latest manuscript I sent them, and I had to prod them into an answer. Enough was enough eventually, so I got rid of them. Fortunately, since they didn't land me a deal, they never cost me money.
Back when they wanted to represent me, I was so happy. I was really, really hoping for a book deal. Then the lady who signed me up left the agency ... and I got that sinking feeling. I was right. Eventually, they just became a burden.
And now that I self-publish, I won't need an agent again. Most likely, I'll need a bookkeeper eventually. I hope.

You might want an agent if one of your stories gets a movie deal. *shrugs*

Yes. That might be a situation where I want to work with an agent.
Agents are in a difficult situation these days. Their classic function as gatekeepers to publishers is diminshing. Some are expanding into publishing themselves. Others are going ... shady.
Not a good time for agents, or for finding good ones.
