Re: What are you reading now?

I just finished reading several books by a Brisbane author called Trent Jamieson.

Roil - a steampunk-type novel, where a giant technology and people eating cloud is taking over the world. It's a lot more fun than it sounds. emoticon It's the first book in a trilogy, and its a bit fragmented, but it's a fun read.

The Business of Death - set in Brisbane, the main character is Death, who is responsible for handling all of the death in brisbane (and subsequently the world). It's the last book in a trilogy (the first being Death most definite), and is full of dark humour and general Australian goodness.

I get the feeling Mr Jamieson must think I'm stalking him, as (in the past 4 weeks) I've seen him at 3 author events, one book launch, he was in a bookshop when I went to buy something else, and I ran into him on the street on my way to work the other day. I'm not actually stalking him. :P

Anyway, I'm ploughing through my back cattledog of fantasy/alternate history fare that people have been impressing on me to read.

Sounds interesting, Blood.

The books I'm reading now also contain Death as a character, interestingly enough. It's a young adults' series by Terry Pratchett about a witch-in-training named Tiffany Aching. (The first book is "The Wee Free Men"). I don't usually like Prachett's writing style or characters, but the witch books are pretty good.

I've read the Giver (for the second time) and I really love that book. I am going to read the sequel but they sound very different from the original emoticon I watched the movie and (as usual) I did not enjoy it at all as much as I enjoyed the book emoticon

What is it about?

It seems I'm taking a reading break right now, after blowing through most of Lindsay Buroker's steampunk stuff (Emperor's Edge and Dragon's Blood).

It does sound fascinating.

I'm reading... mostly Lindsay Buroker. Need to re-read one of her ARCs because I promised to write a review for it.

In non-fiction, I'm reading "2k to 10k" by Rachel Aaron.

It's about writing more and being more specific about what you write - she is a plotter. Or she has become one. I still find that very hard, which is why I'm studying that book.

Finished Reading:

Respect for Acting
by Uta Hagen

Actors need to know their characters as much a writers do. That is the reason why I am reading acting books . . . in order to get to know my characters better.

I'm trying to find the courage to read Take Off Your Pants! by Libby Hawker. Because I'm a fairly ingrained pantser... but I want to be able to write faster and produce more, and that seems to mean plotting.

Yeah. I finally came to the conclusion I should probably outline. (I don't seem to be a very good pantser.) Only I didn't really know how to outline, so I went in search of books that could help me to do that. I found there really aren't any good books on how to outline. I was glad to learn of this book. Will get it once it's in print.

Not sure there will be print...

With the Kindle App, you can read Kindle books on every computer, smartphone etc. I mostly prefer ebook to print now.

I don't like reading books on my laptop. I still haven't decided between getting a Kindle or a Tablet eReader.

quote:

Man, you guys LOVE to take off your pants.

Yes, I will release a paperback edition.
Very soon. I didn't think this book would sell more than a handful of copies, so I figured ebook-only (as with Gotta Read It!) would suffice. But lots of people want a paperback, so I'm putting one together over the coming week, and unless the Internet Gods are against me, it should be proofed and approved and ready to rock before April 25th.

Oh, good.

(She doesn't usually.)

Edited to add: I have come to really love reading on my Kindle. I have an old one, the smallest they ever had, with no integrated keyboard.

It's quite light, and I got a leather jacket for it, so it's well protected. That jacket also has a stand, so I can put the Kindle up on a table or my knees and not have to hold it all the time. And it's so much easier reading on it in bed than with a print book.

I'm sure you'll come to love one, too. And the cheapest are now about $70, so maybe that's a better bargain than a tablet. (I'm still thinking I want a tablet for traveling, but that's for email, FB etc.)

I keep hearing that it's harder reading on a tablet than a Kindle. (glare) emoticon But I have some ebooks with Barnes & Noble, and I do most of my book shopping at Books-A-Million. They bought out B&N and also use The Nook. With a tablet I'd be able to shop from any site I wanted to, not just Amazon. I could use both The Nook & Kindle apps. Plus other eReader apps as well.

That's true.

Since B&N doesn't really sell in Germany, I went with Amazon right away. And people talking about how bad B&N's search function is also scared me away.

And now that the Nook (and B&N) is allied with Author Solutions I will NEVER buy from them, and NEVER upload to them directly emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I hadn't heard of this. I haven't bought from B&N in years. The eBooks were free reads that weren't free on Amazon. I buy all my print books from Books-A-Million.

Reading it right now. It's fascinating because it totally focuses on character, rather than on plot. I might even be able to make that work - I always had a horrible time outlining plot.

Will try that for my next series. emoticon

That sounds interesting. So worth the dollars then? ( I hate spending my few book dollars on something not worth it. emoticon )

Yeah when I plot it seems if I write down something that the characters have to do the story goes all flat and lifeless. Use to be I could write a story if I had a couple of cool ideas and maybe the ending now I seem to be getting lost or bored in the middles so I want to try something new.

I think it's worth the dollars, yes. But then, the Kindle version isn't that expensive. And with the Kindle app, you can read them on every device.

We're trying to get Libby on our podcast, but it won't happen soon.

It's amazing, isn't it?

I'm learning so much by reading other authors, and looking at how they structure stories, dialogue and character development.

Can't turn off my craft view now, even as I enjoy stories in any medium.

Reading "The Life Project" by Helen Pearson.

It's a non-fiction book about the birth cohort studies in the UK that actually changed medicine and social systems. My sister listened to a presentation by the author and got a signed copy - I'm reading it while at her place.

Interesting and non-stressing. emoticon
