Fan Fiction - Again
It seems I have to revise my stance on Fan Fiction at least somewhat. I am forced to admit that it may no longer be as fruitless an exercise as I thought it was.
Read this article: Rewriting the Rules of Fiction
I'm not seeing things in just the same glowing light, but to get book deals for Fan Fiction is certainly news. Still, considering the millions of people writing Fan Fiction (and showing it on the web), getting a book deal for it is very much like winning the lottery.

Re: Fan Fiction - Again
It's an impressive achievement, but this isn't exactly a new concept. I have a novel by James Blish from 1970(ish) which uses Star Trek characters. Since then, dozens of authors have published Star Trek "fan fiction" with Paramount's blessing.

Re: Fan Fiction - Again
While I have read some good fanfiction, I would never bother writing anything more than an amusing short story because of bordom or the like. I find the concept of writing fanfiction most unsatisfying for a number of reasons, especially that they are not your characters in your world.

Re: Fan Fiction - Again
I find fanfiction highly unsatisfying. I enjoy reading things that are original, and by its very nature, fanfiction falls short. Although I think it can be very useful for beginning writers to learn how to write, how to respond to criticism, etc.
The article described a woman who got P & P fanfiction published...I actually read a novel (I assume it was hers, although the author's name escapes me) that continued the P&P storyline. I found it to be nothing but a pale imitation of the wit and vivacity of the original. It was really disappointing. I would much rather fanfic stay in the hands of the amateurs...

Re: Fan Fiction - Again
The best fanfiction I have ever read is where the characters are completely original to the fan-fic author and have nothing but a tenuous link to anyone in the original.
In essence, the only time fan-fiction (in my opinion) has been worth the paper it was written on, is when it is merely a story written in the same universe (but events and characters are not the same).

Re: Fan Fiction - Again
I wonder, if I show fan fiction to people who had not read the original material, would they be able to tell it was fan fiction?
Would their perception of the story change depending on whether they knew it was fan fiction or not?
I'm almost tempted to try it as some kind of challenge. Write a piece of fan fiction beased on a fairly obscure novel. Then rewrite it just sufficiently to give it an original setting and characters, without changing any essential plot or dialogue. Then find which version people prefer (without telling them which is which).
The problem comes in finding a source novel that is completely unknown to your test audience... hmm...

Re: Fan Fiction - Again
Same here Loud G, the good fanfiction I've read has only a tenuous link to the origional world/characters.
David I love that idea
