Releasing a Book a Month

I'm reading a new book on launches (linked in a separate topic in this forum).

The author stresses that releasing a book a month is the best strategy, both for cost and visibility. And he means a full book, 50-60k, or more.

So I have been thinking about how to do that:

It means writing 50-60k a month, and getting an editing, formatting and cover acquisition system in place that supports this pace. I can see how this works, and I know I can write 2k words per day - but this amounts to a NaNo every month, basically.

I think it also means plotting an entire series in advance, at least in a rough way, so you don't have to feel your way through the story and the characters. That's the best way to create arcs that span several books, too.

It would be wonderful to make a living by writing. This would be one way to do it - and I know I can write 2k in about an hour. I type fast. It's the plotting and the marketing that seem difficult to me.

What do you guys think?

So I've been thinking about this some more.

Writing and releasing that quickly basically means going full-time and setting up systems that work well.

I'm nowhere near that. Right now, I'm writing every day, but with low averages. I have published 1-3 books a year, with no real financial success, because they were not in a consistent genre and not written to market.

So maybe the first step would be to publish a book per quarter. Learn how to plan a series. Ease into systems and writing more. That's easily doable by just writing 1k per day. (No, I'm not there yet.)

Lasting change needs onramps. It's smart to create onramps.

So I will do Zell with quarterly releases, starting in fall this year. And I'll add Dragon Pawn and Konrad to the mix, which will mean three books this year. Not too shabby.

Yes. Depending on the word count per book you will need to up the game for your writing. 200-500 words per day is by far not enough.

See that you can hit 1000 and perhaps 2000 words a day.
For a 50.000 words book you would then need 25 to 50 days to write. Edit, proofread etc. also eats up time.

Yes. My long-term goal would be to reach 2k a day again.

I did that for a while last summer, but I realized I need to do more preplanning (not plotting, please, not plotting!) to avoid a lot of rambling.

It's doable. Part of growing a habit.

I can write 2k in about an hour, or 2x 30 minutes. That's not a lot of time, but I will also use some time for thinking and planning. I can do that on my walks to and from work. (I used to do that all the time.)
