I tend to write my story first and then come up with a title for it.

You could also check out our very tongue-in-cheek title games.

Re: A helping hand to those looking for interesting book titles

I'm the other way round. I like to have a title first as it gives me a few ideas as to what the story could be about.

Here are some titles for authors writing adventure novels:

"Serpents and Lords"
"Hunting the Titans"
"Chasing the Void"
"Symbols of the Elements"
"Life beneath the Stars"
"Calling the Sun"
"Possessed by the Mist"
"Throne of Immortality"
"Assassin of Dusk"
"Creators of the West"
"Shelter in the Darkness"
"Lords of Power"
"Knights of the Gods"
"Heroes of Earth"
"Commanding the Jungle"
"Painting the Country"
"Soldier of Heaven"

I use a combination of "working titles" and "story titles."

A "working title" is a title that is less than ten words long. It summarizes the stories arch, so I have a reminder of where the story starts and how it ends.

A decent example is my first novel. The working title was "There and Back Again." The title reminded me I had to get to the Moka star system and then figure out a way for people to return home.

When I finished the first draft, I renamed the story "First Transit."

PR: Jennifer Crusie uses: "Don't Look Down" as the working title for each new project she's working on. It's sort of a play on being high up ... if you look down you'll freeze and get nowhere ... so when she's writing, the title is to remind her to not focus on what she doesn't yet know about the WIP, but to just keep writing and trust that it's there, in the back of her mind somewhere, and she WILL figure it all out as she continues to write.

emoticon Or you'd have to number them. [Or date them.]

She used that title for her collaboration and her co-writer thought it was the actual title, so he wrote a helicopter scene. emoticon I was searching for their book when another book of that same title popped up. I liked the blurb, so I bought it too, plus all of the other books in the series. Two or three, I don't recall for sure.
