How do I spell ... ?

The sound someone makes when something happens to them unexpectedly? The sound people make when they physically, and unexpectedly, bump into each other?

I went searching and discovered that these are interjections which didn't help very much. This Wiktionary 200 page list was awesome!

It could be a grunt, a surprised cry, a squawk, a gasp, nervous laughter... depending on the person, of course.

I wouldn't go for a sound, to be honest. Show us what happens, rather than force it into dialogue.

I love the resource article. Even if I never use a word like oof, or erk in writing and even if my character never uses "gadzooks" it is nice to have a single place to go to find out if I have the spelling correct for sounds and odd expletives being used as an interjection to the normal dialogue.
