I just send out a bill through PayPal, and it was a little easier than I thought. (Getting it right with the tax on it is a hassle.) That's for coaching services.

Now I have the rest of the day for Jutoh and GIMP. And... writing!

Re: 2017 Chat

Funny how I always hope to get a lot done on weekends, and it never happens.

Saturday was hard because I didn't really get enough sleep. Woke up around 3:30 am, and just as I was finally falling asleep again, some of my neighbors first got into a shouting match (at 4am) and then turned on music to party (at 5am). I got up at 5:30 because it was hopeless to even try for sleep.

Yesterday, I did some more website work - added a new anti-spam plugin - that seemed to stop those spam email warnings. I have a feeling someone was using the comment function to send commands to the WP core program to trigger sending a spam email. So I will have to set that up for all of my websites this week. I'll also have to remove the AWeber plugin - for letting people sign up - and replace it with a Widget. (Sorry for the technical stuff.)

And I worked some more on formatting my German novel. It's starting to look nice. Need to come up with acknowledgements and then finish the cover in GIMP. Quite a challenge.

But once I have that down, I can start pumping out books, and that feels awesome! There are so many unfinished stories on my hard drive.

I think I have a cover. There is a tiny little thing to edit out in the background image - easy to fix. Other than that, I want to use it the way it is now. (It's up in the Cover Creation thread in Journey Log.)

It took a lot of coaching from a FB friend, plus a mindset shift about my expectations. I'm simply not able to create a dramatic fantasy cover using my own background shots. And maybe that's perfectly okay.

 emoticon

Today, I want to finish the formatting and start compiling the ebook version(s). Amazon first, three months in KDP Select, then I'll set it wide, which means different versions for D2D and possibly Apple. Although I'm not sure how well a German novel would do there. With a bit of luck, I might even upload it this week. And then I can tackle print.

It's a scary thought. And liberating. I am an indie author now.

So, you can remove a eBook from KDP Select in order to sell it on other sites along side [sign in to see URL]? Just curious for when I finally indie-publish.

Yes. When you put a book into KDP Select (which means it has to be exclusive to Amazon, and it is enrolled in Kindle Unlimited), it's there for 90 days. On the form, you can check whether it will stay enrolled (extended automatically for another period of 90 days), or not. Unchecking it means it'll come out of KDP Select after those 90 days.

And once it comes out of KDP Select one can upload it to other distribtors. If you want to re-enroll, you have to pull it from those distributors first.

I wasn't very productive yesterday. Certain political developments are upsetting and scaring me. I need to decide what to do about that and how to support the moderate political forces in Germany and Europe.

Today I "slept in" for the first time in several months. I was shocked to find myself waking up over 3 hours past my normal "rise and shine" time but it is all good. I really needed the rest, even if it did force me to make some changes it what I was going to do on one of my rare days off. It does feel odd in a way, I am so used to always having things planned out that a day with absolutely nothing planned is weird.

Rick: Glad you got to sleep in. I know many people survive on too little sleep, and even though it means cutting back work hours, getting enough sleep is immensely important.

Yes, the bugs must die! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Jox: Keep asking. I'll gladly explain whatever I know. KDP isn't hard to understand, but figuring out how to market is a different thing entirely.

I forgot to mention that KDP Select allows you to "sell" your book for free on five days during that 90 day period. However, since they have different bestseller lists for free and paid these days, they aren't really useful anymore.

I need to step away from FB and stick to my groups there. I get sucked into political uproar, and it isn't productive. *sigh*

There's a very interesting article by Kris Rusch about the changing business of self-publishing.

]Here, although the title is about something else

Thing is, the gold-rush phase is over. And that's why Amazon isn't as useful anymore as it was a couple of years ago. We now have to consolidate into real businesses and work at it. The get-rich schemes of the early days no longer work...

I like to think it's a good thing. This separates the chaff from the grain, as we say in German. The solid, determined authors will contine and find their way. I hope I can be one of them.

Well, someone is coming to look at the place next weekend. Gulp! This makes it so real. We've lived here over seventeen years and this is it... emoticon

We also have seventeen lambs already with about half of the ewes left to lamb. It's been going great with only one bottle lamb so far. One ewe had triplets and is feeding them all herself.

I guess I'd better get back to packing. emoticon

Uploaded my book yesterday after checking it in the previewer. Couldn't bring myself to do yet another editing run.

Since everything looked good in the preview, I simply uploaded it to Amazon. When I went to bed, status was "publishing".

When I checked this morning, it was live. In fact, the confirmation email was sent before midnight my time. So it really only took a few hours to go through. That's pretty awesome.

Yesterday, my boarder started talking and complaining about how he was "shorted" on his paycheck. He went on and on and on which meant I didn't write or get anything else done that I had planned on doing... Very annoying...

Yes. I do that almost every morning. I do not want this day job, but I do need the money. I want to write or work with clients instead...

And now that I've figured out how easy it is to create an ebook and publish it (the hardest part is actually the cover pic), I can't wait to do it again! It's a little addictive.

I created some ads and a FB header yesterday, and started telling people about my new book. Of course, my German audience is much smaller than my English one.

Even so, it is a little disappointing I sold only a single copy of my new book yesterday. To a friend. *sigh*

Well, more marketing today.

Hurrah for a fan club! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm proud of myself: Yesterday, I called the tax office and spoke to two very nice people there. It seems that changing status to non-VAT business might be very simple (it's possible when staying below a threshold of € 17,500 in sales a year). That will make life easier for me.

And I send a form to the business office declaring the changes in what I'm doing as business owner. I hope my email goes through. Once that's registered, I have to send a letter to the tax office - easy. I'm a little excited and a little scared, but I hope I can buy ISBNs for my print editions soon.

Playing bigger than before... exciting and scary.

For some reason, weekends are usually hard for me emotionally. So I spent time just playing a game and not thinking about anything...

I did make some progress with a writing project, and I actually had enough energy for good spot of cleaning and clearing out stuff.

I'm also continuing my hourly little exercises, and that helps a lot. One of my knees is complaining a bit, so I did less on Sunday, and that could have contributed to feeling down. (I believe I am losing some weight already...)

Now I need cover ideas for erotic SF. My MC is a redhead with green eyes - very few models like that on Shutterstock... only one usable so far. I need to check other sites.

Well the people never showed up so that's a bit disappointing. And, no, we don't have a place yet but you can set things up so they take possession only after you've got a new place.

There's been no new lambs since I was last here, and hopefully they wait until we're past this cold spell. They're all old enough to go racing around the barn yard and it's a blast to watch.

Yay, for getting your book done, Firle! Hopefully it starts selling more soon. Maybe with practice the covers will get easier.

Hi PR, how's the Hymn book coming along?

Rick: I suppose I forgot to mention that my MC is male. emoticon I'd like a shot with a heroic face and a bare chest. *laughs* Like I said, I do have one option so far.

The problem with public domain is often that it's not really public domain. There are licenses that do not allow commercial use - one has to be very careful. At least with offical stock photo sites, the person uploading the pic has to sign an affirmation that they are legally licensing the pic - which means any copyright violation is not my liability.

Trying: Sorry those people were no-shows. emoticon But yay for happy lambs, and I hope the last prospective mothers are waiting for better weather.

Someone else read all the way through my novel on Sunday. emoticon Which means I have probably made €7 in profit already.

I'm exhausted... my little exercises (~ 1 min every hour on the hour) are leaving me somewhat sore and stiff in the morning. At least I'm sleeping better...

I'm posting about my Konrad novel on FB, quoting some text and adding the link, about once a day. Yesteday's post got a lot of responses and thus obviously more views. Sadly, that didn't translate into sales. *sigh*

A friend of mine wrote a glowing review and posted it on her blog. I'm very happy about that, and I'll add it to my book info on Amazon today.

Not much writing, since I had a new client yesterday, and that meant cleaning and prep work, and being somewhat exhausted after the session. I'm certain that old trauma is lurking behind their physical issues...

Hope eveyone is fine!
