2017 Chat

In the Practice Hall, I can accept critique for my stories November and December postings now. emoticon

When I decided to really attempt writing a book I was concerned with how much it would interfere with all the other things I do. I was also worried about getting tired of a story pretty fast given how fast I go through books written by other people.

The interference concern was valid and I have been forced to rearrange a few things but getting tired of the story I am writing has proved false. Granted, I could have read 9 books in the time I have spent on the story so far but instead of being tired I am excited to discover that my story idea is becoming a reality.

Very glad you discovered story-telling as something that's fun and exciting. The best thing about it is that the stories are never the same!

I had to retreat into myself for a few days, especially after coming home from visiting my family. And just yesterday, the world shifted around me in three important areas: Friends, Writing and my Therapy Pracice - after I chose to want shifts in those areas...

The results are that my own little irc chatroom has become busier, that I decided to go completely indie with my books (i.e. doing my own formatting and covers, and redoing the books I already have published), and that I might have a chance of being officially certified in EFT, but also might face a trademark challenge.

2017 is certainly starting with a bang. emoticon

Exciting but frustrating at times. You know the feeling I am sure. You have a scene where you know the outcome but the section you are working on is still kinda fuzzy in your own mind.

BILLS! Ba Humbug, don't the creditors know they are taking time away from what I want to be doing?!? It's bad enough when all I have to deal with is the normal month to month things but now I have to start setting up to deal with the years taxes! To paraphrase a famous movie line... "Taxes, We don't need no stinking Taxes!"

Yeah... taxes are looming on my horizon, as well. I have time until May, but I should get started this month... argh.

Things are still moving fast. I found help with the dragon covers, doing a bit of a barter. I hope they all be done by March, and that I have figured out how to replace even my print files. (It has been suggested to edit the PDFs I have, and I had to make a conscious effort to grasp they are truly mine to do that.)

My mind is relentless at the moment, and it's not letting me get a lot of sleep. So now I have a name and logo for a publishing company if I ever want to start one. (I'll talk to my friend who has one next week, and find out if I want to do it, just for my own books. Mostly because of ISBNs.)

Buehsteppe Verlag, with Buehsteppe Fantasy, Buehsteppe Romance and Buehsteppe non-fiction. The Bühsteppe is a hill with a very distinct topline that I grew up looking at. Nobody else would even understand, I think. The logo would feature that topline, plus my horsie for fantasy (i.e. Hannah), a heart for romance (Joanna) and an open book for non-fiction (Frauke).

In addtion, I have a very clear image for a new cover for "Pu'ukani's Song" which is an awesome story that just doesn't sell. New cover, new blurb, new interior graphics, and maybe it'll do better then. Right now, it looks like a children's story, and it isn't.

Need to go through that Udemy class on Jutoh that I bought last year. Get myself started on putting all those new stories into the pipeline.

Wheeeeeeeeee! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yes, it will be different. You will have to register your publishing company and imprints with Bowker. I have to register a business and then file my tax number with the agency that sells ISBNs in Germany.
 emoticon

We'll get there.

I played a little with Jutoh yesterday, and it was both daunting and amazing. That little program (to the tune of $60 for the pro version) can create all kinds of ebook files, including the Amazon ones, as well as PDF files for various PoD companies, including CreateSpace. They even have a cover generator (which I probably won't use). It handles graphics very well, creates a table of contents, and lets you edit existing files easily.

I also started looking for graphics for potential covers on Shutterstock. It's not too expensive, and those pics tend to be safe where copyright is concerned. So I'll gladly pay for the license.

So while I didn't actually put words in files, I'm working on creating the technical side of my writing business, and it's exciting, scary and... tedious. Heh.

I hope I can get out my first book soon. It's going to be a German urban fantasy romp. I promised my Dad to get it done in 2016, and that didn't quite work out. So it has priority now... biggest problem is the cover.

Anyway, lots of things going on!

I woke up yesterday with the beginnings of a bad cold, at least I hope that is all it is. One thing I discovered about being sick which never occurred to me before is how much mental energy you lose while fighting illness. I should write something to keep my new habit growing but it seems harder to make decisions on a stories pace and flow when you are coughing your head off...

Sorry to hear you got a nasty cold. And yes, being sick - actually, it's the healing work necessary to battle the sickness - does take a lot of energy. If you can, reduce your workload and give yourself and your body the space for that healing work.

I'm happy with my writing and had planned to get into formatting today. Unfortunately, it seems that one of my websites has acquired a nasty script which I need to find and remove. It has happened once before, about two years go. I already asked for help... not sure I can handle this on my own.

That has definitely blighted my day. emoticon

Running virus scans on my computer, but I believe the hole is actually at my provider... it didn't happen through the WordPress installation itself. And my FTP password is tough.

Anyway, trying to enjoy this weekend...

I came out of shock yesterday. No answer from my webguy. I'm hoping for one today, but I'll also start looking for other help.

So I spent yesterday going through my German urban fantasy novel ("Finderlohn"), fixing two factual mistakes and doing very light editing. This story has been through two or three editing runs already, and one beta reader.

Today will be a busy day, but I'll do my best to register Jutoh and get the file imported. Then I'll have to figure out graphics - I took some pics in Göttingen during my last visit that I hope I can use for chapter graphics and possibly break graphics.

Fun times ahead, since I'm very much a noob when it comes to graphics.

Oh, and I think I have a new cover for "Dorelle's Journey". Exiting times!

Firle, what is the problem with your website? If it is something simple I might be able to show you what needs fixing (no charge).

Today I feel "washed out" which means I have my cold on the run. Yay

I have a lot yet to do to get the RDS BotY ready so writing tonight is iffy.

A friend of mine says he has a program that will allow me to import my ship mock-up drawings into it at then convert them into editable 3d style images. I found a game that would allow me to construct the ship but that would require my playing the game for about two years to reach the tech level of the ship so I do not think I will go that route.

I have scheduled a pest exterminator to come to my house this coming Wednesday to get rid of a sudden invasion of mice, cockroaches, and ants. I don't know how that will affect my schedule with writing but the pests have got to go...

PR: I think someone hacked into her website and left a Trojan? emoticon An author I follow had this happen to her website, and anyone who checked her site out got a virus. IIRC, Lesa has commented about precautions to take to try and prevent this from happening. I think it either happened to her, or almost happened to her? Of course, you can take all the precautions you want, but if your website host doesn't you're still screwed.

Rick: Sorry to hear you're still so sick. And eeeek, about the invasion of mice, roaches and ants! Are they coming in through the cold spell?
I'm usually fine with my websites, WP isn't a difficult CMS, and I don't change a running system much, either.

Jox: I did have that same website hacked about two years ago, and fixing it was somewhat involved, as it required a full new install of WordPress, and then re-importing the data files into the SQL database, mostly by hand. Fortunately, I didn't lose any data... but I wasn't looking forward to doing all that again!

I finally talked to my webguy last night, and I have good news! emoticon

The potentially malicious script in the WP installation of my website turned out to be a weakness of the WordPress core program itself, an exploit of the php-mailer. This was actually fixed by the update I installed the day I got the warning, so in fact, the problem has already been eliminated. That explains why I didn't get any further warnings.

I'm settling down into guard mode after cancelling the red alert. Huge relief. I'm only now realizing how much this burdened me. emoticon

I played with Jutoh some more, got it registered and discovered I need to give myself permission for a learning curve. It is funny to step back and observe how unrealistically high my expectations for myself are - so I'm coaching myself and feel better already. I can and I will learn to handle Jutoh with ease. emoticon

I'm also tentatively planning to go and register a miniature publishing house under my name next week - German law is very different from US law in this - which is easy because I already hold a busines license for my EFT coaching work. That will allow me to purchase ISBNs at a reasonable price.

I'm ready to become a full indie author, and it feels awesome.

Jox: Don't wait until you read those books to get started. It's just a delaying tactic. emoticon

I don't know what's going on, but I feel overwhelmed at the moment. Maybe that's just normal when facing the many details of going full indie while working a part-time job and building a practice...

Went to a dr. appointment yesterday after a busy day at work (not used to that, ahem). Took much longer than I thought, and getting home also took longer than I thought (waiting for a bus in the cold etc.). And when I finally got home, I had no energy left for anything. Managed my FB posting, set up pics for the month, supported my group members and then just flopped. Was in bed a little after 9pm. *thud*

Today, I will drive myself further into exhaustion, I fear. I didn't take the bike to work because of the rain and storm, but I will have to run more errands after work, which means more walking in bad weather. My body is already telling me it wants a rest. I'm receiving a session this afternoon which is good, but which also prevents me from taking a real good nap.

So not sure what kind of writing will happen today, except I already did a blog post and set up the newsletter for my German EFT blog before work this morning... should start working on tomorrow's blog post.

Anyway, have a good day, and happy writing!

That is truly a dirty trick! But good for you. I hope you enjoyed the nap.

I got a step closer to my big cover reveal: The cover for Dorelle's Journey is done. I'll share it soon, but will hold back a little longer on FB. Because I'm not ready to be yelled at by the BHC people... *sigh*

Today, I'm meeting a friend who is both an author and a small press publisher. I have a ton of questions for her, including starting my own little publishing company. That's necessary for purchasing ISBNs at a reasonable price here in Germany. It shouldn't be too hard to accomplish, since I already have a business license.

Unfortunately, that means very little writing for me again. But I did write and schedule a longish blog post for today, so that's something.

Happy Writing! emoticon

Nice advice. emoticon

I have something like that in one of the online classes I created for my writing coaching stuff. Maybe I should run that one again... but I need a platform that sells it for me, because of silly EU tax laws.

Still no writing... yesterday was a busy day with running errands and meeting with a friend. And I did a lot of exercise and ended up really tired. Really tired and somewhat sore even this morning.

Worked to get started on the second dragon cover. Talked basic cover ideas with the awesome author helping me with them.

I didn't learn much about running a small publishing company talking to my friend, though, which means I'll have to spend more time doing research. I want to get it all set up by the end of the month - the actual "offical" act" will be a very simple visit at the town hall, but before that I need to figure out exactly what I want and need.

Exciting and exhausting times...

I was wondering why a character in my story needed a name since I thought he was just going to be one of those "prop-characters" for one of my rescue scenes. Then when it came time for the actual set-up I discovered the character was a perfect fit as the consummate complainer! emoticon

Wheeeeeee! Yes, that kind of character is needed, too! And maybe you can kill him or her off in the most satisfying way - or have them turn around and state they are happy for a change.

I've been struggling with the Jutoh tutorial, as well as learning very basic GIMP functions while trying to do advanced graphics magic. Ahem. Typical for the smart scanner type that I am. *sigh*

On the other hand, I am rather proud of reviving my general EFT blog this month, with a couple of picture posts and one real coaching post today, which was accompanied by a newsletter. Let's hope it won't lead to a bunch of people unsubscribing...

The last time I did routine maintenance on my computer was back in October. So Saturday night I started on the routines and the process took from 10 PM Saturday to 9:21 PM Sunday to complete! Needless to say, nothing else was done and the time it took reminded me why I was doing one maintenance routine per month instead of doing them all back to back...

I added 8 words to my story just to keep my "add to daily" promise to myself but I really would not call that tiny addition "writing."

What kind of maintainance do you do?

I try to keep recent on updates, and I run the occasional virus check.

I was kind of busy all day, but I also got lost on FB a lot. Learning about structure. And using my timer to remind me to move around and get my heartbeat up once an hour. It is getting tedious, but it also seems to work - three days of doing it, and it takes longer to get results. (Compared to a gym workout, this is teeny tiny, but I hope that doing it so regularly and all day will make a difference.)

Saw the new cover draft for "Kraken War", and it's stunning. Feel pressure to reformat the books now...

My computer maintenance routine:

Daily - ]Piriform CCleaner cleaner option only.

Month 1 - - Search & Destroy and CCleaner Registry

Month 2 - ]Malwarebytes and ]AML Free Registry Cleaner and Backup

Month 3 - ]Piriform Defraggler and CCleaner Tools, Free Space driver wiper

Month 3 routines take the longest and because of Windows 10 I have to stay around the computer and tell it I am still around so it doesn't "hibernate" on me.

I have a lot of nervous energy in me today and maybe it affected my story writing, not sure but maybe. I found myself taking more "breaks" than normal and used the breaks to do some cleaning in my home office. The result was writing in 5-10 word segments, being unhappy with the results and editing, over and over and over again trying to get the scene right. This is by far the hardest day on my NaNo-NaNo challenge and I attribute that to my being unsettled and nervous about something that I have not been able to identify in my mind yet.

Nervous energy will affect writing because it affects thinking. *hugs* Hope things got better.

My day was rather unproductive yesterday. Had two skype meetings, did my FB work, played a game... did my exercises. Couldn't really focus.

This morning, I installed Writer's Cafe on my computer and my usb stick. Which means I can use it at work. Ahem. We'll see how that goes.

This morning, I wrote the blog post and set up the newsletter for my German EFT blog. I had started the post yesterday, so it was easy to finish it.

Then I did admin work for my websites since there was an update, and took a good look at the WordFence safety scans. To my horror, they don't go through on two of my four websites, which means the sites did get hacked, and the malicious files include something that blocks my safety scan.

 emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm almost ready to shell out money for professional help, at least for my coaching website. This money includes better protection for a year. The other option is to do a clean, new install of WordPress, transfer the database (after checking it for executable files), fix all the links and delete the old, infected install. My webguy and I will decide this tomorrow afternoon.

I'm trying to stay calm. This is highly annoying but hopefully doable. Yet it certainly takes some amount of energy away from my other projects.

So writing isn't guarateed today, either. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Re: 2017 Chat

I am wrestling with my "Circles" story background. On the one hand, I want to tell the reader everything up front but doing so "feels" like that would be a mistake.

The bugs are still in my house! I saw several of them last night while getting ready for bed and that is annoying to me. If they are still popping up Monday I am calling the pest control service again because I refuse to let the bugs win!

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good holiday season!
I had a relaxing time with the family then it was back to work. We've started sorting and packing, though still not sure where we'll be going to. Also the lambs started coming on the first so that involves going to bed later, getting up at least once in the night and then getting up early. Me = emoticon Still the mothers, so far, have had enough milk which makes everything so much easier!

P.K. : We fed the ants in our house borax and honey and they disappeared. emoticon

I'd procrastinate now, but it would be easier tomorrow.

Rick: Sorry you're still having bugs in the house!

And give yourself time to work out the Circles world. I believe it's better to let readers explore the background in stories through the stories themselves. Nobody enjoys an infodump at the beginning of a book.

Trying: Welcome back after the holiddays. I hope you'll find a good place to live. Yay for the lambs and all mothers having enough milk. Lambing season is hard enough without bottlefeeding!

Today, we'll take a look at the websites that were hacked. I still have some hope that the symptom I saw yesterday might be caused by two plugins giving each other trouble... a theory I'll test this afternoon. Wish me luck!!
I also updated one major plugin and haven't had spam sent since... again, wish me luck. This is incredibly worrysome.

I'm working my way through the Jutoh tutorial, which requires a lot of patience. However, it seems to make creating ebooks extremely easy, and it might even make formatting print books easy. One can hope. I plan to make more progress on the weekend.
