Cithera is begging to know what is going on. She hasn't been given the opportunity to say anything yet, but she is very nervous about what Angeni and Leonard are saying and implying when it comes to the PLS. I have not given her a chance because the actions of the PLS are still somewhat vague in my mind.

So my word count is down. That is okay since the time I can spend on a new story is cut in half while I edit the first book.

Yes, the count looks pathetic when compared to some, but I am growing the story a little bit every day. Plus, you wouldn't believe the things that pop into my head that I don't put down in the story. I get this feeling my characters are teasing me at times which is odd.

I wonder if the number of words I write will rise when I finish my "first edit" and give the first novel to my beta readers?

Exactly, you are growing your story every day, and that is more than many people can say. It is actually a rather awesome thing to watch.

And I totally believe you with your characters. It happens to me. They can be quite loud. emoticon

I am thinking about the world of the 28th century and fleshing out the results of the 25th century "Identity Wars" which began with a border battle between India and China.

The war began as a minor conflict, but quickly spread into a global 12-year conflict! emoticon

My fight scene took over 400 words for an eight-second fight (give or take a couple). I had to create a storyboard to get the parts in place, and that cost me the better part of three days! Thank goodness the fight was essential to advancing the story. I don't know if it writing fight scenes gets more comfortable but I am placing them on my "only if required" list.

Yes. Fight scenes will get easier with practice.

I tend to watch them in slow motion in my mind, and then write them out. And sometimes, my characters take over when writing them, and it all sorts itself almost magically.

Before writing anything today, I made my goal for January 1, 2018, of finishing my first round edit of my January 2016 post. It took two months to edit three months of writing. Whew!

At this rate, I am aiming to finish the 1st round edits by my B-Day in April. Wish me luck. emoticon

I had trouble getting into "editing mode" this morning. I did it, but I didn't feel as though the changes significantly improved the readability of the story. I did make a few minor changes. I added new features in one spot and removed a scene killing detail leaving it to the reader's imagination.

My concern is my mood as I was making the edits. Am I doing my best when I edit just because "editing" is on my schedule? Maybe I need to change things up and flip the editing and writing time based on how I feel when looking at the stories.

I have to be careful if I do a flip on the schedule not to neglect whichever thing it is that I flip. Does that make sense?

I've been thinking about this...

For one, you're an editing nooby, as well as a "young" writer. emoticon That means editing requires a lot of focus and thought from you. It will get easier once you get more practice as a writer - your drafts will get much better and require less intervention.

*hugs* For now, edit when you're on top of things and feeling focused. Because you really want to make that editing easy on yourself.

Still, it WILL get easier, believe me. emoticon

Re: Contemplations

Fifteen months ago I was feeling overwhelmed and needed something to change things. I knew the place I was in wasn't healthy. I cut back on Runboard and TRD activities but my "replacement activities" were worse. I was on a downward spiral.

What I needed was an activity that built on what I already knew and which I could see as helping or entertaining others.

Writing has proven to be that activity for me. Learning the craft and creating time slots for doing it is a challenge but I excel at meeting challenges.

I have a long way to go yet but I am getting closer to regaining my balance. I love working on my books and I am starting to look for ways to do more on Runboard and TRD. Life is looking good again.

(end of personal musings, onward to my morning editing). emoticon

Benjamin laughed, “Philippi, I don’t know how to break this to you, but when people reach a certain age they start seeking a companion to share life experiences. The process is called ‘dating,’ are you sure you never heard of the ritual?”
-------
quote:

Firlefanz wrote:

Rick: Well done! How open is your society to dating members of the same sex?

This aspect is harder to write than it is for me to write opposite gender parts. The PLS society, on the whole, recognizes ten classifications of gender and relationships. The "Identity Wars" helped with acceptance issues (a side benefit discussed in schools).

When Benjamin makes his quip to Philippi, a careful reader will notice he phrased "dating" as a companionship issue that could include any of the gender relationship combinations.

I was not aware of Holly Lisle's List when I started creating the PLS universe. Her work is very similar to what I came up with, but she is much more detailed. Where my gender assignments could be called "fuzzy and still evolving," her's are set in stone.

I have no plans to include one of the "alternative relationships" in my books in an "open, in your face" manner. My personal beliefs would make any such relationship both problematic and contrived, distracting from the stories I am trying to tell. There may be a couple in my world where I drop hints (i.e., the complicated relationship between Cindy and Mona) but I won't dwell on it.

Re: Contemplations

What is "magic?" I read a definition such as this one:

1. The power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.

The definition is circular, the stated idea of influencing events relies on undefined concepts and ideas.

My thought on magic is a controlled connection with a person's "life state." The ability of the individual to harmonize or disrupt their surroundings using the force of life, emotions, and stress to achieve a resolution to a perceived problem or threat.

The ability to use magic is related both sympathetically and harmonically.

Example #1: the charismatic leader who convinces a crowd their view is correct no matter what evidence exists to the contrary.

Example #2: the actor who can cause emotions to manifest themselves by the force of their acting ability.

Now think of how things would be if the terms we use had a basis it magic realism. I could be "burning with rage" and by projecting that "burning emotion" I could set things on fire. Perhaps I feel like "I want to disappear," and the magical energy would cause me to vanish!

I think this idea of magic is a decent foundation to build upon for my "fantasy stories."

I finished work on the North and South American Continents in my PLS Universe. So far the "Identity Wars" resulted in the creation of 24 new "nation states" and one reunification. Small countries fared much better in the IW than their larger counterparts in the Americas.

Under my current system, both editing time and writing time are not yielding the results I want to achieve. The present method does work, but it is not satisfying in the way it was when I was writing my very first "first draft."

So, I am going to keep a journal of my time for a few days to see if a new methodology will present itself as a better way to use my time. I feel like my current system is the best I can do, but the journal might show me an opportunity I am missing.
