Playing with GIMP. It's fun and yet sometimes really, really frustrating.

Here's one of the things I created recently. The background pic shows the bark of an oak tree, but of course, I lightened it and reduced the color intensity so it works as background.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I want to have at least one pic for each of my books, so I can easily post about them once a week or so. I put this one as pinned post on my author page on FB, and the reach has been surprisingly good. Much better than plain posts.

So this was today's aha. emoticon

Jox: I know the feelings caused by the loss of one's mother. I know you cannot describe it either, not really, not even to someone else who has gone through the same thing. I do know that it gets easier to cope as time goes by but that doesn't mean the loss isn't still there, it just means you don't get ambushed by your emotions so frequently. The "experts" tell me that 18 months is about the normal time it takes to heal and perhaps they are correct but even after seven years there are still things that will cause me to cry over the loss of my own mom.

She was in a lot of pain at the end. Whenever anyone ask how they could help, I'd ask them to pray for her to go fast, and she did. Hospice gave us two weeks, and it was a matter of days. I think that helps us deal with the loss better ... knowing she's not in pain anymore. We don't want her back if it means more pain. We know she's happier where she is and wouldn't want to come back anyways. Plus, we've known since 2006/2007 her illness was going to take her at some point. She had an 8 to 10 year window. Perhaps that helped. Or maybe our grief will come once we done sorting all her property. emoticon

I go to Mom's house every day to feed her outside cat, and it just feels like she's on a trip and will return. Cleaning out the house will probably be hard. We've been waiting for the humidity to drop, and then stuff came up. Hopefully, we'll get to it soon.

I'm sure it matters a lot that she's no longer in pain. When it is a relief they can go...

Wishing you all the best for the time when you go through her things and clean out the house.

Thank you. I appreciate that. We're taking our time, even though some are saying we need to hurry up because an empty house gets run down faster than a house being lived in. I think it's because they turn off the electricity, or heat and air. We've left it all on.

Yesterday, I went on a photo safari in the big park near me. I had a new tele lens to test - and it's awesome. Here's my favorite pic from the afternoon.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

All in all, I took about 200 pics, some of them in bursts to catch a bird. Many are overexposed - I really need to learn how to handle that camera. The light was special, very soft and mellow, with a near fog in their air.

It's been great fun to just grab pictures. It was exciting, and a little overwhelming, too. Here's another one:

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

This is actually a very popular park. I often had to wait for people to walk out of the picture. If you look closely, you can spy a bike in the distance. emoticon

I love taking pics. I still have to learn a lot, but this is so useful for making cover images or ads. Or just for having fun. emoticon

I'm using a fairly old Canon (EOS 350D) my husband and I bought together years ago, and my teacher suggested a rather cheap tele lens she herself enjoys using, a Sigma 70-300 zoom with a macro function that only cost €130. So it wasn't a huge investment. Other than that, it just takes a lot of time. emoticon

So this morning, I finally finished the dragon story I've been struggling with for over a year. Yes, it still needs editing and it will gain a few more small scenes, but for now, I'm done with the draft.

And this afternoon, I'll start my NaNovel. emoticon

Sounds good!

I started my NaNo novel, and did 2k for it yesterday. This morning, I managed another 300 words, even though today's German blogpost had priority.

It feels good to be really writing again. I hope I can keep it up. I don't have much of a plot for that NaNovel - not a surprise, really. I know a few turning points and how it'll end. Usually, that's enough for me to create a story.

I am marking each day at the beginning of the post. No chapters and paragraph breaks are where I feel comfortable. Probably a bad technique but I can't worry about those things if I am going to have any hope of completing the challenge. I know the start, have a few scenes for the middle floating around in my head, still hazy about the 3rd stage but I do have an ending.

Chapter breaks are for editing. Don't worry about that now. Just write whichever way feels comfortable for you at the moment.

And it sounds as if you have enough of a plot to make it work. More stuff for the middle will show up when you get close.

Did my second day of 2k. I have a little reward system for that: I put a sticker on my wall calendar if I manage 2k words that day.

I'm bending NaNo rules, and started a second story. In fact, I alternated between both all day yesterday, which was really funny. I add up wordcount for NaNo. emoticon

My first story is devolving into a kind of eco-fantasy. I'm working to get more action into it to keep it moving.

The second story is action/adventure/romance/fantasy, and simply a joy to write. I just found the villain. emoticon

Love NaNo, even though it can be a pain to make the word count happen. But it is getting me back into writing after a year of being mostly blocked. And that's wonderful.

I don't see why you can't use NaNo to write a short story per day, or every two or three days. Or two or more novelettes/novellas over the 30 days. emoticon

The point is to start and finish a project, is it not? Well, in these cases it would be to start/finish projects.

Yesterday I went to bed 3 hours early (for me) to try and recharge my batteries a bit.

I am having trouble with the word count balance behind the story. My vision is a four part story, Intro, crisis, recovery, and return. Each is important but I keep wanting to work on the intro part and postpone the movement into the crisis part of the story. I have scheduled tomorrow off from my other jobs and plan to hole up with a pot of coffee and my computer to see how close I can come to catching up. I may start that process tonight when I get home but that depends on just how draining today's workload turns out to be...

What exactly is so hard about the crisis part? What makes it a crisis and how does it affect the main characters?

I couldn't write yesterday. No focus. I may need another day off today, as I'm deeply affected by current news. It feels too mundane to write about a naive druid or a proud dragon warrior.

The hard part about the crisis portion of the story is that I have no life experience that even comes close to what happens. I am even finding it difficult to find examples in both my fiction and non-fiction books which tells me that this event is not something that is used much in any of the genres that I read. Sooo... if you are following my posts in the Practice Hall expect a lot of meandering while I work through it. I suspect it will be in need of serious editing later on...

The posts are a bit hard to read... good luck with the crisis!

I had to take a break of two days, but I'm planning to get back to writing my 2k today. The MCs of both of my stories are talking to me about what happens next, so that's good.

I went to bed at 8:30 last night. That definitely helped. emoticon

PR: Do you _have_ to write that part of the story right now? Can it wait until the end of the month? Why not write what you can of it, and write comments/notes on what you want that part of the story to do. Maybe return to it from time to time as ideas come to you. Then when NaNo is over, you can do the research needed to perfect it. emoticon

Well, I finally got my MCs in bed together (in the dragon story that was supposed to be Romance), but turning it into a sex scene just doesn't jibe. I'll finish that scene, but I'll probably cut it out in editing.

I hate it when that happens. But usually, my characters are right. So maybe this will become my new Hannah dragon series rather than Joanna Romance.

Firlefanz: The month is half over so I am going to combine the current posts for my NaNo project into one post which will include everything I manage to get done for day 16. That should help for those who are wanting to read everything done so far and give me a word count for the first half of the month.

Joxcenia: The first crisis point is critical for the way the story works out so I have to at least try and get it done so I will have a clue on how the second half of the story works out.
