2016 Chat

Funny how I missed that. emoticon

Anway, let's acknowledge it's a new year and use this thread for chatting. And I'll post more often, even if I'll probably talk to myself...

This year, I've been having trouble writing. I wrote quite a lot during my Christmas vacation (a purely erotic story that may never see the light of the day). And then I got stalled out on my dragon story...

Yesterday, I got clear on the next little bit, and I hope I can write it today. It doesn't look likely: I have a translation to do (very technical!), I have two EFT sessions and I need to prepare Wednesday's blog. Yeah, my practice does keep me busy.

I also sent out my first erotic romance to six beta-readers and already have feedback from two. One loved it to bit, the other had valid critizism, but also liked it. I have to go through her file today. Or tomorrow.

I really hope to start my new pen name with a bunch of stories in May or June. That'll be a steep learning curve in formatting.

So that's it from me today. How are you guys doing?

Hi, Firle!
I too had trouble getting back into writing after the holidays but have slowly started making progress again. I think this story might turn into a novel, my first [sign in to see URL] years I think. I kept getting lost in the details and 'tone' of it and finally just decided to write the first draft as a very filled in outline and go back and fix everything later. So far it's working and I'm getting excited about the story again. emoticon
I'm looking into self-publishing but all I have are unconnected short stories and it seems as if series or novels would sell better... Plus tax stuff freaks me out. emoticon I think if I do e-books I'll use Kobo for that reason, no fiddling with U.S. taxes.
On the farming side I bought a little travel trailer and plan on building a shed around it so I can live in it year round. So I'll be moved out of my parent's house but still on their farm. Land is so expensive! But they're lending some so I can start seeing if my ideas will work!
When you finish your dragon story I can look over it for you, if you want. Glad you found people to read your other story for you, I have to say I prefer the old 'fade to black', so wouldn't have been much help there. emoticon
This year should be less busy so I'll try to pop in more, I miss talking writing with people when I'm away!

Tax stuff has gotten really easy with Amazon and CreateSpace, as well as Draft2Digital. Basically, you fill in a form telling them you're not paying taxes in the US (but elsewhere, providing your tax number), and they just put that into their files and send you the money.

The days of tax-withholding are definitely over.

Glad to hear you're writing. That's sooo good! And yes, don't worry about the details. Just write, make notes where you want to fix something and then do one, maybe two more passes. Do not rewrite.

I love your idea of setting up your own space! That's wonderful.

And thank you for your offer - I really hope I can finish that dragon story soon. It's really holding me back.

Happy writing!

Got feedback for my erotic romance story. Most test readers just loved it, one (who is also a writer) tore it apart.

 emoticon emoticon emoticon

While I was lying awake in bed during the night, I figured out a few things to change, to make the story flow better.

So that's good. I'm excited and yet reluctant to start fiddling with my story (I hate story surgery).

Cool, thanks for the help!
I think the difference with this story is it's a lot longer then I'm use to, it might even be a novel. emoticon With a short story I can hold the basics in my head and fill everything else in as I go, but it just wasn't working for this story. When I get it done I'll have to see if I can fill in all the details without getting bored...
I'm excited about my trailer too! emoticon I wanted to get started last year but with everything going on just didn't have the time or energy. I've already started scraping off the old paint and gathering wood for the shed walls so as soon as spring comes I can get started.

What kind of problems are you having with the dragon story? Maybe talking about it will help?
Glad you got help with your story! Interesting how differently the non-writers and writer felt about it. I wonder if the non-writers will like it more after you fix the problem/s? Good luck with the repairs!

Thanks!

All the best for your trailer! I know you will manage, and have your own home soon. emoticon

I think my problem with the dragon story is that I know what must happen. And they are sad things. People die. I have written some of that already, and there will be a happy reunion, too, but ... *sigh* I'll just have to write it.

I'm gearing up to do major editing on the romance story. Just got a little more feedback. But the editing is always so difficult because my stories flow. Breaking that flow to insert more pieces is very, very hard - and restoring the flow afterwards, as well. And privately, I'm not always convinced it makes a story better. In this case... I can see the points where the story takes a sudden curve that might throw readers.

And I guess I'm rambling. I really don't want to do this...

All the best for your long story! May it turn out well.

Aw! Killing characters isn't easy is it? Good luck! emoticon
And of course good luck with the editing! I think it depends on the story or type of writer whether it makes it better or not. I usually fix the flow if I do any editing so obviously we're different!

So far I'm almost 'finished' the first pov on my long story and am just about up to 7k words, very rough words. emoticon Then it's on to the second pov, which I haven't planned as much so we'll see how that goes. I've been writing it in what I call list-i-tous: They did this, they did that and then this other thing happened. Very boring, yet oddly fun to write. Maybe I find the details harder to come up with???

On the farming side the skunks are coming out of hibernation. Good and yet so stinky! But it means spring is coming!!!! emoticon This winter has been wonderful weather wise but I couldn't enjoy it because I've been worried about the hay the whole time. As soon as the grass comes up I'll be skipping around with the lambs and singing. emoticon

Glad spring is coming for you! We might get some warmth at the end of this week, as well. I'm really looking forward to that. I can imagine that you'll greet the new grass with as much enthusiasm as your animals. emoticon

Well, if you're having fun with the outline, that's all good. And you can add the details once you really get into the story.

Haven't managed to write my dragon story. And I'm getting feedback on my romance story that means a lot of hard work. I'm grateful for that level of details, but ugh. I hate editing. And I'm not always sure it's good for my story...

Happy writing!

The geese are heading North! And we managed to find and buy enough hay to last until the grass is ready. Such a weight off my mind! emoticon The ewes born last year have started lambing, four new lambs but sadly one was born dead and one was abandoned by her mom so I have a bottle [sign in to see URL]. emoticon She is so tiny, I mean really, really tiny! And has a bit of a rattle in her chest so it wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't make it. We'll see I guess. emoticon

My writing is still going good. I started on the second POV a few days ago and just today ran into the end of where I had planned so spent my time working things out and writing weird notes. emoticon Mom's going to be mad she was reading along and now she can't. Ha! She's not a writer and so far doesn't point out plot holes and the like but I watch her face as she reads to tell if I'm getting the emotions right. On the last story I wrote she hit the plot twist and her face went like this: emoticon I cackled like a maniac and may have even skipped around the house a little...

How's your writing going, Firle? And anyone else out there as well. emoticon

Ohhhh, I wish you all the best for that little lamb. Hope it makes it. And I bet that getting some hay was HUGE!

I'm very happy you're having so much fun with your writing. That's wonderful! And I love that you have an "emotional barometer" in your mom. emoticon

I haven't been writing. I got a very, very detailed crit from a good friend for my first erotic romance story, in chat. I put it all into a file, and it's about three pages!

So much to change. I'm a bit overwhelmed with that. But I really need to push myself to finish the dragon story. And I must learn formatting. Just MUST.

Still struggling with the dragon story and the editing. And in addition, another story is trying to burst through. emoticon

I plan to overcome inertia this weekend and really make progress.

I'll also have to start asking around for reviews again. My dragon stories need them. And as soon as I finish my dragon story and send it to my partners for formatting etc, I need to schedule a sale for Dorelle's Journey.

Another plan: Create a little video interview with myself for every book, and stick them on YouTube and my website. And share them on FB once in a while...

I can do that. I have created little EFT videos, so I really should be able to do that for my books, as well.

Re: 2016 Chat

Hi! I'm back. emoticon It seems like we've skipped spring and went right to summer so I've been busy with farm chores. Building/fixing fences and getting the garden ready mostly. Also we've started spreading mulch in the sheep pasture because it was grazed so hard last year and this year looks to be even worse for water. It hasn't rained for about two months and was almost 40 Celsius before noon today.
I've also been working on my trailer but now we're probably going to stick it in the hay field and load it up in case there's a fire near us again. There's already been one, some nutcase setting off fireworks. Luckily the locals weren't putting up with the endless meetings that went on last year and it's out already. The professionals weren't too happy. But if the farmers keep lighting their fields on fire I'm sure they'll make their money this summer. :S
I've started writing on my longer story and it's going well, treating each chapter like a short story seems to be working. I'm trying to ignore the voice in my head that keeps telling me I'm going to forget all the details before I finish, I have an 11k outline thingy after all! emoticon

How's your story coming, Firle? This is the fourth in the series, right? I saw you published Dragon Court, how's it doing? Let me know if you need a beta reader!
Don't you love it when new stories try to take over? emoticon It seems almost guaranteed to happen if your current project is giving you problems.
Video interviews could be interesting, one more way to reach readers, eh? Hope it works out for you.

I'll try to keep in better touch, so you know I haven't been fried, but this week we're planning on mulching the garden and the pasture, cutting a fire guard around the house, and packing my trailer. So I may just collapse into bed each night. emoticon
Oh, Haddad, hope you're safe from the fires in Alberta! emoticon

Hi Trying, good to see you! emoticon

Yeah, I heard about Ft. McMurray, that's horrible. So the idea of filling up the trailer with hay just in case is probably a good one.

I love hearing that your writing is going so well. Yes, chapters can be like short stories - of course, you have the overarching plot, but even a chapter needs an arc of tension. Great that it's working for you.

Yes, I published Dragon Court in October last year. It's doing okay, but I haven't had a sale in April. Well, one print sale of Dorelle's Journey. *sigh*

Still stuck on the fourth story in the dragon series. I started editing it (and asked for dragon names on FB), so t here is progress. I'm hoping that reconnecting with the character will lead to being able to write the big showdown.
I'll definitely send it to you when I need a beta reader. And I will need them and you! emoticon

I'm trying to blog every day right now, and I need to finish another short story ("Dragon Girl", where Dorelle meets Mashira) as email sign-up reward. I need to build an audience away from Facebook and Twitter - those don't really sell books.

This in addition to building a client base for a writing academy I want to start this year (well, right now, that feels too ambitious). But it's a lot of work all around, and my writing is suffering. But I really want to replace the income from my day job and earn money doing what I really love.

All the best for all that work - cutting a fire guard sounds most important right now. Take care!

Looking forward to the Na-No this year and I hope to try something different if it is okay... Instead of typing on my word processor I would like to type my Na-No attempt on this message board. The story attempt will be the very first Interstellar flight and will most probably have tons of mistakes in it since Na-No only gives one month to try and complete a 50,000-word manuscript. Okay or not Okay, that is the question. emoticon

I'd suggest the Practice Hall, so your story has some protection there. And you can get feedback from others if they notice.

Good luck for NaNo! emoticon

I created the first post for my NaNo today. All it has is the story title, subtitle, author name, and start date in it. I won't start writing the story until the NaNo starts but come November 1st I hope to be posting approximately 2000 words a day, more if an idea explodes in my mind. emoticon

I'm very much looking forward to that. emoticon

I hope NaNo works for me this year. I have three or four projects that actually need work, but all are in various stages of completion so not exactly good for NaNo.

My last NaNo hero has just raised his hand, as well... Depending on which genre I write, I might post parts in the Practice Hall as well. Might be a nice incentive...

Right now, I MUST, just absolutely MUST finish my dragon novella and the Cloud Lands Saga series. I'm almost a year late, and I've never had writers' block this bad. emoticon

Even so, I think I won't be able to publish it before January. *sigh*

The NaNo group I work with tells me it doesn't matter how bad I think it is. The object is to put words on the page and then go from there in the creation of the story. Every time I complain they point out that only one writer in modern history created a "ready to publish" book on the first draft. emoticon

I wonder if WattPad would be a good place to post the work of the day? I'm a member, but I haven't posted anything there yet ... nor done any reading there either. I joined when an author I follow on facebook posted a link to the latest work of hers posted on her WattPad page, and then totally forgot all about the site. emoticon emoticon

Maybe, I have not examined that site to see what it is like.

I like it here, though, I am at least familiar with the members and more than that, I trust them to be fair and honest which means a lot more to me than a fancy interface.

I'm on Wattpad, and it is a platform that can help build a following. I believe "Here be Dragons" is partially doing better than my other books because I have one story out of it on Wattpad with a link to Amazon. (I'm not very active there, although I was for about a month last year...)

However... there is no privacy whatsoever on Wattpad. And it is mostly populated by teens writing fanfiction. *sigh*

Yeah. One teen's fictional work inspired by the "Twilight Saga" series got noticed there and was traditionally published. (Abigail Gibbs/Canse12) That's how I learned of the site. Plus, Indie Authors who were once Traditionally Published also use the site to draw attention to their works. Bob Mayer, for one.

If you're not a fanfic writing teen, it seems it could be a place where Indie Authors could share excerpts and sample chapters to draw attention to their works on Amazon and other such sites. emoticon Or to get an idea if a work can garner interest, perhaps?

Yes, that's what authors do on Wattpad. I think Lindsay Buroker built up quite a following there - or it was someone else whose name I forgot.

It can be quite a starting block - but like all marketing, it takes skill.

My publishers first response was "What? You thought this was easy?" emoticon

That was back in 2014 when I figured I could have my hymnbook ready and on its way to publication by Christmas of that year!

I am learning that writing or editing or compiling is not just fun and games, it can be but it is also a lot of work.

See, now that's where my Mom always got my knickers in a bunch. I'd say writing was work, and she'd shake her head no and state matter-of-factly that writing was fun. Still a sore spot with me.

[Edit]

I did a Google search, and it seems she has written a couple of blog posts on the subject, but I can't seem to get the pages, or website, to load. I'll try again later to see if the site/server problems get fixed.

Thanks for digging that up, Jox. emoticon

Lindsay Buroker is also doing a marketing podcast. Truth is, I just don't have to time to watch it a lot. Maybe I should, she's making a fortune with her books. Literally. (But she's also publishing like a madwoman, I think she puts out 10+ books a year.)

Maybe you could meet your mom in the middle? Writing and publishing can be both fun *and* work. emoticon

Lindsay Buroker sounds like a Perry Rhodan writer! That is a huge volume of work.

Yes. And she's publishing under a pen name in addition to that.

She runs an insane workload - writing up to 8,000 words a day. Her system of editors, cover artists and formatters is very well timed, too. She has turned herself into a publishing machine.

Having said that, I'm less fond of her latest series. It feels repetetive. Which isn't a huge surprise, considering how fast she works.

Sadly, she died April 30th. Or, happily, since at her death it was a relief to see her pain finally ended.

*hugs*

My work as coach has taught me that even after family members have died, conflicts can be resolved. So it's still an option, even if the conversation might feel one-sided. emoticon

It is good she's free of pain. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
