2015 Chat

And this is the thread for idle chat. Or fun chat. Or just ... chat.

 emoticon

Anyway, I really want to generate a bit of income with my writing this year.

So I tried out Draft2Digital yesterday. My anthology "Here be Dragons" should be up on Nook, Kobo, Squid and one other place by now. However, iBooks is pissy about Amazon links in the epub file and refuses to put it up.

That's an important lesson: Apple is a nasty company. They were happily pricefixing ebooks with all big publishers - and got their fingers slapped for it. Live and let live was never in their books. I won't buy a single thing from them.

Amazon is still the big gorilla, of course, with the biggest market share on selling ebooks. However, getting any visibility on Amazon is hard, considering there literally are millions of ebooks in their stores now. And since I only have two short stories and one anthology out there, my books are not really visible.

The trick is to change that. emoticon

I'm really excited:

I just uploaded the cover and a dummy file to Amazon, for my new book, Dorelle's Journey. It'll go on preorder tomorrow, with a release on Feb. 24th.

And I'll post again just to show off the cover. It is utterly awesome.

Congrats, Firle! I hope it sells well for you.

Things are trucking along here. So far our sheep have had two sets of triplets and a set of twins with twelve more ewes to lamb. If they keep having so many lambs we're going to be over run!One of our cows is expecting any day as well. Hopefully the good weather holds so we don't lose any more of the babies! The first ewe lambed when it was really cold out and lost one lamb before we got there and the other died in my arms while I was trying to save him. emoticon
January has been pretty mild but we just got another six inches of snow which makes outside chores a pain. Can't complain too much though. Compared to last winter this one has been easy.
My writing has been going good, gearing up to start writing February's story already. I haven't done any editing though or figured out self-publishing if I go that route, somehow I always get caught up in writing the next story. emoticon

Oh, so sorry those two lambs died. emoticon

At least the others are doing fine, and I'm wishing all the best for the rest of the fur ladies and their babies.

And yay for writing! If you are on Facebook (I think you are), check out the Indie Author Group. Donna Wilson is just starting some anthology projects, and maybe that would be a chance for you to get out a story or two, and get to know other indie authors.

Happy Writing!

I forgot to write out the front matter that I want to include. Something like a greeting to my reader and thanks to my main beta-reader. I don't think it's a big problem, my formatting people won't work with the file today. (But I hope Vern will read it! He's a fan.)

Lindsay Buroker does this, and she's really, really successful. Can't hurt to follow her example. emoticon

Oh good! I was having trouble with my email at the time and if I remember right you were as well.

Sorry for disappearing through February, but it was crazy busy. I now have five bottle lambs, the most we've ever had at one time, and am supplementing four more. When they were little I was feeding six times a day, two of which were in the middle of the night, thankfully they're down to three feedings now and I am a little more rested. The thing that scares me is we still have roughly half the flock to lamb! We're not sure how they got so spread out, but if the rest continue the pattern we'll still be lambing two months from now. emoticon At least will be warmer...

As well as dealing with 'my' quintuplets and all the other new lambs, I designed my sister's wedding invitations, wrote a story, did the normal chores, and cut firewood because Dad had surgery! For some strange reason I've been feeling tired and stressed. Then there are moments like today which remind me that yes I do love what I do: We were putting out the hay and the guardian dogs were laying outside amid the sheep and lambs when the newest set of lambs (Born yesterday.) gave a rather distressed sounding cry from the barn. Up came the dogs' heads and they raced into the barn and made sure everything was okay. Never seen them respond quite like that before and yes everything was okay the lambs just wanted their mom to get up and feed them.

So yeah February was crazy and the rest of the year is shaping up to be the same. There's two sets of people moving, two weddings and all the company that entails, building fences, feeders and a pen and shed for the ram. On top of that we still have to do all the normal farm stuff and I want to keep writing. I think I'm going to go nap while I can!!!!
I hope everyone's writing is going good and your lives are a little calmer then mine is right now.

I'm very happy to hear that your guardian dogs are taking their job so seriously. I remember how hard it was to get them going - are they keeping coyotes away? It certainly seems like that.

I hope the other ewes make up their minds and lamb soon, so you can get back to your normal schedule.

And of course: congratulations to your sister for getting married!

I get grouchy if I go too long without writing so I try to fit it in if at all possible. Two more ewes lambed since I last came on so only 4-6 left! emoticon Hopefully they lamb while this gorgeous weather is here.
We haven't lost any animals to the coyotes since the puppies, as we still call them emoticon, started working at six months. According to what Mom's read guardian dogs are suppose to start working a three years so they've been great. I was sort of afraid when we first got them that they would be aggressive but they are incredibly loving. They lean against your side and look up at you with a look in their huge golden eyes that says: Human, I adore you! It's how they always seem to mooch tummy rubs! emoticon

Thanks for the congrats for my sister! I'm so happy for her! emoticon Even if she's making me be a bridesmaid. emoticon

Trying: I'm very happy the guard dogs are both working and adoring you and the sheep. So glad you got them - they are worth it, right?

And hey, a bridesmaid doesn't have to do much, does she? I'm really not sure about the customs. And I didn't have bridesmaids when I got married... but we did a very low key wedding anyway.

Brian: Glad you're writing! What's your favorite genre?

I've been promoting my new book - showing the cover around, bragging a little, quoting reviews - and I think I sold about 30 copies by now. Which is ... not much at all. I'm not making back the money I'm paying for the formatting. Or haven't yet.

Self-publishing is a game with a very long tail. As copyright is now, my books will be able to make money for me and my heirs until 70 years after my death, so there is a lot of time to win back that investment. I'll just have to teach my nephews how to manage them. emoticon

The other thing that I have going for me is that I'm working on a series now. All three previous books have been stand-alones, or an anthology. They don't feed each other as much as a series does. And of course ... now I write dragons. People love dragons.

But I'd still like a bit of luck and get a real breakthrough. emoticon

Hi, everyone!
We had another lamb on Friday, which I had to pull. A little guy that was crowded in the womb so his legs are curved a bit. They seemed to straightening a bit he's able to keep up to his mom anyways.
It was looking like we were going to have an early spring, but we getting snowed on today. We'll have to see what it adds up to, there's already a couple of inches.

I hope your book continues to sell, Firle! Yeah I don't do much as a bridesmaid. Just dress fancy and walk down the aisle in front of a horde of people.

What kind of band do you play in? (Do I call you Brian or Messup? emoticon )

Trying: Glad you managed to save the lamb! And I'm sure his legs will straighten and be totally normal. So happy he's keeping up with mom. Booo for the snow, though.

"Dorelle's Journey" has stopped selling. emoticon Last sale was over a week ago. Working out some promo... but that makes me really sad.

On the other hand, I'm working hard on part 3. And creating a map for Kraken War. We'll put that up for preorder in April, with a release date in May. I'm planning some free days for Dorelle around that time... I hope that'll boost visibility a bit more - and sales later on.

As you can see, there's always something - but writing the next book is usually the best choice. It takes a bunch of books to be truly visible all the time.

Yeah he is doing good and has been named, Doodle bug. emoticon His feet are still a bit odd but he seems to get around good. All the other lambs are doing good. I rigged up a feeder fence so I don't have to hold the bottles for my hoard (8) of older bottle lambs. Up to yesterday I was still feeding the three younger ones by themselves but the cow finally calved! So I put them on the fence as well and milked. It was funny tonight I was milking and I head Minnie go, baa? Then she peeked around the corner at me and her face lit up and she came running baaing at me. I went: What's wrong? Did your bottle slip? And she replied: Baa! So I went to check and sure enough it had. After I fixed it she was quite happy again.
The little calf is a heifer and a soft brown colour with a tiny speck of white behind her one eye. She's really quiet and friendly.
I haven't started this month's story yet but have a few ideas rumbling around. I thinking of outlining, rather tired of getting half through a story and running out of steam.

So did your promo work for Dorelle's Journey, Firle? I bet Kraken War coming out helps it. Let me know when part three needs critiquers, I'd be happy to help.

Happy writing!

So happy Doodle bug is doing well. And eight(!) bottle fed lambs? That's hard work. So smart of you to rig a fence to feed them. And how cute and smart of Minnie to call you when the bottle had slipped.

The calf sounds cute, too. As it's a heifer, will you keep her?

The promo hasn't happened yet. I need to check dates with my formatting people. But I did enter Dorelle into a contest with Readers' Favorite. It would be awesome if the book got into the finals... great marketing stuff. So here's hoping.

I'm planning a Goodreads giveaway soon (maybe even in a week or two), but it needs to be timed with the preorder for Kraken War. Probably three signed copies worldwide (that'll cost me around 30 Euro for the books and postage).

Still working on Part 3, but closing in on the good stuff. Need to get my beta-readers alerted... and I'll be very, very happy to send it to you, as well!

Hi. emoticon I meant to pop in last weekend but Dad was in a car accident so yeah plans changed... Luckily no one was seriously hurt though both vehicles were totaled. We also had another calf born that weekend, a little bull calf this time. We named the heifer Snickers because of her colour so Mom named the boy Mars and now we have the Candy Bar Calves. We weren't planning on keeping Snickers but she is really sweet and smart so we'll see.
At the high point I was feeding eleven lambs emoticon The older ones have started weaning themselves and I'm busy milking so am not sure how many come over and eating anymore. They all seem happy and healthy so I'm happy. No more waking up three times in the night to feed them. emoticon
Everything was greening up but then it snowed three inches, as well as raining, this weekend so everything is white again. The sun came out tonight and it's already melting, thankfully. We were starting to renovate the lilac hedge but that's stalled until the snow [sign in to see URL]. At least Grandma and Grandpa got mostly moved before this mess came.

How did Dorelle do in the contest? Wow shipping things costs so much! I sent my Aunt a letter and it cost a dollar, made me want to switch to email. emoticon How's part three coming?I look forward to helping when it's ready.

Hi Trying!

Sorry about the accident and the totalled cars. But at least nobody got seriously hurt - phew! That's a relief.

Glad your lambs are doing so well, and you really made me laugh with the Candy Bar Calves. You won't keep the bull calf, will you? (I just read that many farmers in Europe kill bull calves from milk lines because it's not even worth it selling them for meat. *sigh*)

And man, you're getting a lot of snow. Hope it melts away soon, and you get a real spring. Where did your grandparents move to?

The contest doesn't really start until May... I just got in early so it was cheaper. I'm really hoping that Dorelle gets to be a finalist, that would be awesome. And I really need to enter her into an Amazon contest in the next few days, too.

I'm a little stuck on writing the third part, even though I'm almost done. The ending feels a little lame... so I've been writing and plotting fan fiction. I almost feel dirty.

 emoticon

But! My Goodreads Giveaway starts today, and I'm giving away five signed copies internationally. I'm getting excited!

Yeah it could have been very bad! He's still a bit bruised but other then that is doing good.

I laughed when Mom first called them that as well. No we won't keep him. Our cows are duel-purpose so we get meat and milk from them. Actually they're triple, but we don't use them for oxen. Dairy farmers around here sell the bull calves to beef ranchers or small time farmers like us. Seems crazy just to put them down. emoticon

I think over the whole winter we actually got less snow then normal but a lot of it has come very late in the spring. Last Monday we still had snow from the weekend and it was -10 then by Wednesday it was +30. It was such a jump in temperature it made you feel ill. Now they're predicting more snow...

We've been busy fencing and soon it'll be time to put the garden in. My writing has taken a bit of a hit but I've still managed to write a bit.

How's your writing going? And all the contests?

I hope your dad's bruises will go away soon. That always takes longer than people think...

And it's good that your cows are dual use. I think that's much more natural, really. I also hope that this kind of cow is more robust, since they don't have to do anything to the extreme. So it's good to hear that your bull calf is worth his weight.

And I can't believe you are still getting snow! That sounds crazy! (On the other hand, we still expect frost until Mid-May, so some plants are only put into the ground after that.) I do hope you'll have spring come soon.

Writng is going well. I finished "Dragon Court", part 3 of The Cloud Lands Saga just on Monday. Will have to do some intense editing now, and of course, wirting part 4.

I have entered "Dorelle's Journey" into two contests, "Readers's Favorite" and the KDP Awards. I don't expect to hear from them anytime soon. The KDP Awards will announce the winners in October...

On the other hand, I'm having great fun with podcasting. We meet every Friday and do another episode. emoticon

Yeah they're good cows. Even the bulls are nice and gentle most of the time. The Candy Bar calves are growing good and kicking up their heels all over the pasture. I'm teaching Snickers to lift her feet up on command, she listens better then the dogs. emoticon

We get frost into May as well. And snow in early April is pretty normal but not usually three inches. Luckily it melted fast and the grass has been growing or we'd have to buy more hay. (Almost typed buy snow there. emoticon )

I've been puttering away at my story, I kinda planned it last month so I at least have an idea where I want it to go. I've been having a hard time fitting it in though, Mom's not much of a planner so I never am sure when the best time to do my writing is. I know farming doesn't lend its self to hard and fast plans but having a general plan would be nice...

Congrats of finishing Part three! Do you like rewriting/editing or do you prefer writing the first draft? Good luck withe the contests!! Crosses fingers! Man, how are you going to wait so long to hear back? I'd chew my fingernails off!

I'd procrastinate now, but it would be easier tomorrow.
