I Saw a Tornado Today

I had woken up from a nap, thinking I had heard a thunderclap. So I got up and walked on the balcony. And then I saw something funny in a corner of the sky.

I looked closer and thought that this must be a tornado. So I raced for my little camera and took some pictures.

Nobody else seemed to notice, and truth be told, it was far, far away. I'm surprised my camera picked it up so well.

Then the tornado twisted a little, and I was sure of what I was watching:

I watched it a bit longer, but after these two pics, ...

... the tornado wandered behind that antenna and then dissolved. I don't think it ever touched ground. I haven't found any news on it yet.

Wow. Scary. I'd never heard of tornadoes outside of the US. I just assumed they didn't occur in other parts of the world.

Oh, we do have them in Europe, but a lot less frequently than in the US - and fortunately, also mostly less strong ones.

This is the first one I have ever seen with my own eyes. It still feels unreal, to be honest.

Re: I Saw a Tornado Today

So I sent one of the pictures to our local newspaper on Sunday, through their contact form.

Monday, I got a terse email with a stupid header ("re:your email" - almost chucked it into the spam folder) telling me that the picture hadn't made it through.

So I replied as soon as I could, attaching all five pics, and giving them access to the originals through my dropbox. And got ZERO response. Nothing. Nada. emoticon

And I feel that my bad opinion of them just got vindicated. I won't send them anything ever again. They don't even have the courtesy to say thank you for thinking of them.

It's so stupid of them. With a simple, quick email, they could have turned a reader into a happy supporter, even if the pics were not good enough to use. Instead, they made sure I won't ever buy a subscription.

On the other hand, I contacted a person yesterday who collects tornado sightings in Germany and maintains a website about them. He was right on the spot, asking me for more details, for the originals and whether it was okay to publish the pics and attributing them to me. ([sign in to see URL]) A mention is up there already, with a promise of more to follow. (Wankendorf, Schleswig-Holstein)

That list surprised me. It seems that last Sunday, for example, there were nine sightings of tornados or funnel clouds in Germany. Granted, it was a day with a lot of squalls and several small cells, but the entire list for the year is also very, very impressive. I never knew we had that many tornados in Germany. Fortunately, most of them are small and weak.

Wow - great shots! Glad the tornado website saw the value in them, even if the newspaper didn't.

Yes, I'm very happy with the tornado list. They were friendly, grateful and competent.
