The Best Apps for Writing

This list might be helpful (and of course, it will get dated eventually).

There is one thing I disagree with: Nobody is stuck with Microsoft Word these days. There is always Open Office or Libre Office. (And you can't really beat free, either.)

I bought Scrivener and I'm starting to use it - really like how it organizes chapters and notes. I keep a name list in there now.

Just to share: On my computer, OO won't open up a saved Publisher file, but LO will. It didn't occur to me to resave the Publisher file I opened in LO to see if OO would open up the LO file. I'll have to remember to try that soon.

Yes, I believe Libre Office is the more advanced one. They branched off from Open Office when Sun stopped the work on Open Office for a while. Not sure of the current situation, but it seems there are people working on developing OO again.

I have LibreOffice on my computer.

I had OO on my computer until Pastor Rick suggested LO, so I now have both on my computer. I figured it wouldn't hurt to play with the two of them. OO looks nicer, but LO does seem more up to date.

Ah, yes, Pastor Rick would know. He's pretty good about these things. Of course, maybe I should look for an update of my LO - this is something I don't do often.

I much prefer LO over Microsoft. It writes cleaner code, too.

I bought scrivener ad really like it for the most part. There are some oddities in how it manages information, but overall it is a nice program.

If I am writing short works though, I just use word.

Well, I installed LO on a USB stick (there is a portable version), so I can write at work, when I have nothing to do there.

Can't do that with Scrivener, so for now I'm writing in LO, and then transferring chapters to Scrivener. emoticon

Re: The Best Apps for Writing

I downloaded both a long time ago, but I've done nothing more than open them from time to time. I plan on using yWriter5, as their website is in English should I need to check it out from time to time during my learning process. I'll probably uninstall Storybook at some point.

I bought some books of K.M. Weiland's recently, which lead me to her yWriter videos. I plan on using her books, and other books I'm also currently reading, along with yWriter5 to outline up to 4 books at a time. Then write the one that is fleshed out the best and ready to be written.

Here are her books:

I'm working my way through her outlining book/workbook now ... plus working my way through these other books:

I'm using these books to outline, and then I'll use them to write a first draft for each of the books I outlined, one by one ... or to improve any outline that is weak, before writing the first draft.

I read each book up to Premise/Summary, and then will go through each step using all of the books, one by one. Hopefully that way I'll find the best route that works for me. And if I can't grasp the technique from one book, surely I'll be able to understand it from another. emoticon

It will be a lot slower doing it this way, but I'm hoping it will help me learn better by focusing on each step more thoroughly before moving on to the next step. ... And then again I may get bored doing it this way and change it up.

BTW: I messed up on the first link, and have edited to fix it. I added:

... I believe that the Storybook4 website is in German? You could use Storybook4 for your works written in German, and use yWriter5 for works written in English. emoticon But then, you might not want to have to learn two programs at the same time. I know I wouldn't.

Wow, that's an awesome list of resources.

Right now ... I'm happy using just LibreOffice. I don't outline a lot and probably never will. Outlining in any detail kills the story for me.

That's why Scrivener is so awesome for non-ficion writing. You need outlines for that. (And that is one reason why my non-fiction writing isn't really getting off the ground.)

I just have one question ... being a writing coach and all that:

Are you digging into all these tools and books to avoid actually writing? It can be an elaborate form of procrastination.

I don't think so. I have considered myself a pantser for many, many years. And I've considered myself having writer's block for many of those years.

One book I read recently stated that writer's block was only a symptom of not outlining. So I began to wonder if I really had writer's block, or if I was actually an outliner, and not a pantser after all. And now I'm trying my hand at outlining to see if it breaks the writer's block.

I can't avoid what I'm not doing, or only doing in spurts of inspiration. emoticon I'm really hoping this opens up the flood gates and I can become a daily writer, and not having to wait for inspiration. We will see. Maybe I will discover it's a balance of both.

I hope you can break through that block. I know what you're talking about - I mostly write in inspired spurts, but I want to get away from that. It's not productive enough. My dream is to write at least 1k words every day... so hard to do when scheduling and time discipline are not coming naturally for me.

Let me know how it works!

I will.

I have put the books down while I work on an eArticle. I'm hoping to have it finished within the next couple of months so I can Indie-Publish it. I figure while I'm learning Scribus and IndiePublishing, I'll also put out the three humorous alphabet books in eFormat ... then later on maybe put the three eBooks all together into one print book. emoticon

Once I'm done with that I'll get back to outlining the four books I hope to write in the future.

I'm also working on a NonFiction book I hope to get out this year, or early next year. (I keep saying this every year, but maybe one of them will come true eventually.)
