The Power of Series

Short, succinct blog post on why series are useful for writers.

Let me add that Amazon loves series, and gives them high visibility. If you're planning a new work, have found a new character or are designing a new world, do consider creating a series out of it.

The Power of a Series

So. What series are you going to write next? emoticon

Re: The Power of Series

I've only recently started to enjoy book series. Most of the time I wait until all the books in the series have been written before getting and reading them. I hate waiting a year or more for the next book. Sometimes I'll go ahead and buy the books, but I won't read them until I have the last book.

I've never had any ideas for a series. It seems a lot harder than writing one book. I have two projects in the thinking/plotting process that would probably work as a series, if only I could figure out how to do it. I'm just not sure I have that ability in me.

I don't know much about how a series works, or how to turn a story into a trilogy. I've been trying to figure out how to have each chapter work as a serial, so that I can sell each chapter for 99 cents ... then later on put it all into one novel to sell. Even that thought process is eluding me.

I suppose I should look for books on how to write serials & series. *shrugs* I'm sure there are different plotting strategies involved in the process than in normal writing.

Re: The Power of Series

An example of how series happen...

Loooooong time ago (and a few weeks before that) I was on an amateur writers' list. We had a small contest, to write a 25.000 word story in 2 weeks. Yes, half a Nanowrimo. I wrote a funny story about a wicked witch.
People demanded part two. Then part three.
I am currently editing part 23 and writing part 24.
The trick to a series, I think, is to have a few characters who are open for more than 1 adventure. Don't lock them into 1 story and certainly do not make them live happily ever after. Keep the door open for the next story.

Just my €0.02.
