"Here be Dragons"

That's the title of my new short story collection - I hope. Details are still getting worked out.

Yesterday, I did the most important step: I sent the whole collection off to my formatting guys.

Celebration time! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thanks! The title will probably be shortened to "Here be Dragons". Subtitle: Eight fantastic tales

I'm excited. emoticon

I have several works I could have ready to publish within the next few months, but for some reason I keep putting it off. I guess I fear lack of interest by anyone, or nothing but bad reviews. *shrugs*

That's a classic fear: The fear of rejection.
(I wrote a blog article about that here.)

Truth is, I haven't had a single bad review for my two ebooks. The worst one was a 4-star review on Amazon. emoticon

I also got a rather convoluted review on Goodreads that basically said: "I'm mad at the author because she didn't write a novel about this."

For me, the worst is that people are not buying. *shrugs* But I have a lifetime to recover the cost of formatting. And once I have more books out there, all of them will sell better.

Think about it: What is the absolute worst that can happen?

I know. I just keep talking myself into waiting until later. I've been putting it off for years now. If I had really forced myself to just do it, I'd have published years ago, long before it got to be so popular. Back when Lulu.com & CafePress.com were pretty much the only options. emoticon

Yeah. Maybe waiting did have an advantage. Better get my act together before someone puts a kink in this indie publishing movement. emoticon

I'm not expecting kinks. Amazon might change some rules, but now there is enough momentum for people to create new places in that case. There are already many other stores for ebooks.

What's happening now is that you might lose out on income. (Might, because the marketing is also not always easy).

So, what's your first step?

Wrote the blurb today.

quote:

Eight stories of classic fantasy. Eight adventures full of cunning and magic. Eight lovable heroes. Old and grumpy, young and eager, wary or daring, they come in all shapes – some are not even human. Eight worlds that will send your imagination soaring on fancy wings. Eight tales that will warm your heart. Eight stories that will leave a smile on your face.

What are you waiting for?

And I saw the cover preview, and now a glimpse of the interior, and I can tell you - it's utterly awesome! I am so in love with it, I'm sure others will also be delighted.

I hope so. It's now #37 on the Kindle / Fantasy / Anthology list, and #46 on Books / Fantasy / Anthology.

I'm blown away. I had no idea this would happen. My other books never made it on any lists - or maybe I didn't notice. But this time, I'm taking screenshots like crazy.

Your next eBook might go even higher. The more works you have for sale, the more they might end up on the list every now and again. Especially new works.

Working on my next release, which will be the start of a series. I really hope that'll be the breakthrough.

IIRC, Bob Mayer & Holly Lisle say not to sweat it until you have ten or more works for sale. That's when you market like crazy.

Yeah. I'm still posting about it on FB, and I'm working on a blog post with some eye candy.

Friend of mine is offering story #1 in a freebie, with a link to my anthology. So I hope this might generate a few sales, too.

Yes, then I will offer a few stories forever free. emoticon

A friend of mine is putting a story from "Here Be Dragons" into a sampler of his. With links to Amazon, of course.

That's the same story that is visible when "looking inside" a book on Amazon, so I'm not giving away anything that's not free anyway.

I'm hoping this might drive a few more sales. Also, I did have one sale each on Sunday and Monday. emoticon

I imagine you'll have plenty of ups and downs. And those ups and downs will have really good days, fair days, and bad days. Hopefully, the more works you put out, the better up days you will have. *crosses-fingers*

I follow an author on Twitter who has a reader who reads her works, then gets a refund afterwords. This reader has been going through each series in order, and Amazon won't do anything to stop them.

Yes, I know, Amazon gives refunds for ebooks, and I think for about four weeks after the sale. It's highly controversial because it enables frauds like that. If it's only one, I would let it slip. (Eventually, Amazon does block account of people who return too many items, though.)

On the other hand, I see it as another form of piracy. You can't really stop it, so it's not worth getting angry over it. Most people who use pirate sites wouldn't pay for a book anyway, so it's not as if you're losing sales. The only good thing about is that people will find you that way, hopefully start loving you and telling others about you. And some of those others would prefer owning (or licensing) a copy.

In other news, I had to re-upload the interior of the print version, since CreateSpace inserted a mistake (in the header of the last story). So now I have three special print copies - two of which will be sold - and hopefully every new copy will be perfect. The new version should be live later today... fun times.

On the other hand CreateSpace were really helpful when I finally realized I had a type in the subtitle I entered when starting the project. I sent email to their support and they graciously removed the typo. I couldn't have done it myself, because that would have meant starting an entirely new project with a new ISBN. (The horror!) emoticon

So I like how they work and what they offer. emoticon
