Hello all!
I've wondered over here plenty of times but for some reason just never got around to joining until now!
I love storytelling, but I admit more from the listener/readers point of view. I've tried my hand at writing but find I'm WAY too picky to ever finish a thing. It's a beautiful art form and something I'm a bit jealous of. I can do the "write about my every day life" thing but fiction eludes me.
So here I am!

Re: Hello all!
Welcome, Texas!
Yes, you're right. One of the hardest skills to master in writing is the ability to just set words to paper and LET THEM BE so you can finish the rest, even if it's not perfect.
If you're interested in starting, a good way to begin is through short (even very short) stories.
Also, what part of Texas are you from, if you don't mind me asking? I spent eight years in Austin, myself.

Re: Hello all!
Born and raised in Austin! I did live in New Orleans and Savannah GA for a bit but had to make it back home. I do love it here.
I'm working through the exercises on the board here. I would say that the teeny short story I wrote for the first exercise in the Quill... forum is probably the most complete thing I've written since creative writing class in college. Wow, 371 words. Boy I have a lot to work on!

Re: Hello all!
Don't worry about it. If that's what comes out of you after you haven't practiced (non-dry-scientific) writing in years, you're doing REALLY well! Honestly, I was pleasantly impressed.
Also, if you're going to do the exercises, maybe I should as well. Many of them were posted before I started on this board and I never went back and did them. Hmmm... Maybe I'll even start a new one, if you're actually thinking about writing to them! I could use the practice myself.
Anyone else care to write a few practice shorts?

Re: Hello all!
And I should put up some more practice exercises.
Wohoo, this board is waking up again. What do you say about a challenge for February?

Re: Hello all!
I have frequently talked about writing and have probably tossed around a hundred ideas in my head, but I honestly don't recall a single fictional thing that I really wrote (again, besides bad college crud - and it was only a portion of a class!). I tried NaNo 2 years ago and got a whooping 500 words in before stalling. I've been looking for a creative outlet lately...maybe I should stick to this for a bit!
I'd be up for a challenge (I think...I'm scared! )!

Re: Hello all!
I've tried nano a few times now, at first I didn't get any better results then you. But the last time or two I've managed a bit more, so perhaps it can help a bit at increasing the amount of words you write if done multiple times.
