Meet the Alien from below the Sea
I knew octopoi were intelligent. I like them for the feats. But the article I link here goes a bit further: Friendship.
Inside the mind of the octopus
I enjoyed it a lot. And it might even give me ideas for a short story.

Re: Meet the Alien from below the Sea
It's interesting how many reasonably intelligent species we've managed to find in the end. I guess it's just that in the past we weren't looking at them as having partially alien mindsets and thus they didn't seem as smart as they might really be.

That was truly fascinating. I knew octopi were smart, but not too much more about them. Thanks for the link, Firle.

Re: Meet the Alien from below the Sea
Here's something I saw in the paper the other day:
http://www.metro.co.uk/weird/879643-octopus-uses-paint-pot-lid-to-build-a-dulux-new-home
The (printed) newspaper had more pictures that made it obvious it really was carrying the lid around and using it to hide under.

Re: Meet the Alien from below the Sea
Awww! He's a really cute little guy, too!
Enjoy the new home, buddy!
So, on a related note, a week or two ago, my lunch group was walking around the little bay by our work, on our way to a nearby restaurant (because Fridays are MADE for eating lunch out!). While looking into the water, we noted once again that some idiot had shoved a metal shopping cart off the seawall and into the 1-2m-deep water. Now, it's been there for some time -- at least the 1.5 years I've been here, and we've noted it before, usually with grumbling about idiot litterers. But this time, my boyfriend makes this sort of comment:
"So, how long does a piece of junk have to be sitting at the bottom of the ocean before it stops being called 'litter' and starts being called an 'artificial reef'?"
And he's sort of right. I mean, the shopping cart is unsightly, but a whole lot of little sea critters are now using it as their home. I guess lobster fishermen in the northeast used to throw old washing machines into the depths, because lobsters love to hang out in them. Same thing about the paint can lid in Meadow's article.
Anyhow, it just made me wonder if these creatures always see us humans as horrible destroyers of the planet, or if some of them proto-think with their proto-brains, "Sweet! Maybe he'll toss me tiling for my home today!" whenever they see us walk by!
