It's something everyone wants done, but no one wants to pay to do. I'm really glad to hear your kiddie book translation is going somewhere now, though, Firle! Congrats!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Reythia)Mon, 19 Sep 2011 14:51:03 +0000 Re: Bilingual children's book acceptedhttps://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233085,from=rss#post233085https://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233085,from=rss#post233085David: I'm even a certified translator, so yes, I have thought about it. I'm translating my own stories, after all. However, there is a reason why most German versions of my beloved fantasy novels are awful: The pay is extremely low. In order to make a meager living from translating novels, one has to translate one every week. Now, imagine translating a standard fantasy tale of about 300 pages or more in just one week. What happens is this: Individuality and style just fly out of the window. There is no *time* to care about the atmosphere or special flavour of a world. Even just typing such a novel would almost take as long. Yes, there are famous translators of famous books. They either are paid much more (if they are really famous), or they treat it as hobby. I had to find that out about the most famous translator of Russian novels. She made her living teaching at university. Nobody thought to pay her enough to live on her translations, despite all the praise heaped on her. I'll stick to translating my own stuff and making money elsewhere. Sad, really.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Mon, 19 Sep 2011 12:58:01 +0000 Re: Bilingual children's book acceptedhttps://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233084,from=rss#post233084https://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233084,from=rss#post233084Congratulations! I think you must be the perfect person to go to for a project like this -- not only is your English perfect, but you can also write so you're going to choose the best sounding words Have you ever thought about a career of fiction translation? nondisclosed_email@example.com (David Meadows)Mon, 19 Sep 2011 11:04:37 +0000 Re: Bilingual children's book acceptedhttps://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233081,from=rss#post233081https://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233081,from=rss#post233081Congratulations Firlefanz, hopefully it will be of help to lots of children as well. nondisclosed_email@example.com (QS2)Sun, 18 Sep 2011 23:22:19 +0000 Bilingual children's book acceptedhttps://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233080,from=rss#post233080https://bmysticaladventures.runboard.com/p233080,from=rss#post233080A couple of years ago, a friend of mine asked me if I were interested in translating her children's book to English so it could be offered as bilinguial edition. It's a really cute little story about animals becoming friends (yes, it's for very small children). I did the translation, and then the publisher who wanted the book folded. Basically, we shelved the thing. But she kept looking for opportunities, and finally succeeded. So now it's supposed to go to print early next year. I'm quite happy about that.    nondisclosed_email@example.com (Firlefanz)Sun, 18 Sep 2011 18:32:35 +0000
