Digging up the gold...

Hi all, hope everyone's doing ok.

Just had an experience that I thought I'd share, just to see how many of you have had anything similar.

Have any of you ever actually re-discovered something that you wrote 'ages' ago, read through it and realised that perhaps your writing isn't bad after all?

I just had that happen to me. Years and years ago I wrote a series (well, three!) of short stories all based around the same main characters, one of which never got finished because even though I liked the setting and a couple of the story-specific characters I couldn't actually come up with a storyline. Now, at the time of writing, I had my usual self-condeming attitude of, "This is crap, why am I even bothering?" and as a result have spent the past X years doing my best not to think about them. The other day, however, out of absolutely nowhere, I suddenly had a thought of a storyline I could inject into the setting (even though I'd tried to forget the writing, I've never really been able to forget the characters/setting) and so, against my instinctive lack of confidence, I dug what I'd done of the story up and, to my complete and utter shock, found out that it was actually really good! Sure the prose could have been tightened up a bit here and there, but I was amazed to discover that my writing wasn't/isn't nearly half as bad as I thought it was at the time.

It came as a very nice surprise emoticon

Anyway, I just wondered if any of you have enjoyed similar feelings? Nice, isn't it?

Now I've just got to find time between Governor Meetings and school-hunting to get on with it!

Hope everybody else's writing's going ok emoticon

Dan

Dan, that's wonderful! emoticon

Yes, I've had that happen to me. Once, I started a novella from something I had dreamed but couldn't come up with a story line to continue with it.

Years later, I dug through my files and didn't recognise that one. I opened it, and the writing was so good I wondered who might have sent me that fragment - until I remembered that I had written it myself!

I still have no story line for that one, sadly.

However, I do wish you lots of fun with your characters and their new story line. Happy writing!

That's awesome, Flash!

I've never had quite as strong a reaction, no. But I have gone back and reread something from a long time back and been very pleased at it.

I think, sometimes, that it's very hard to judge yourself fairly when you're plugging away at something. As writers, we tend to see the flaws and weaknesses of our works, rather than the general overview. That's generally good, because it shows us what needs fixing, but sometimes it's harsh on the ego!

Good luck rewriting the story!

I am too new to have experienced that when it comes to writing but I keep looking at the story fragments I have written here (I call it a fragment if it is less than 2,000 words) and keep telling myself I have to finish some of those some day...
