Research on reading

Research in human reading gives us this now many years old result. To see what it is about have fun reading the following example paragraph. emoticon

cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid. Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer is in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh?

emoticon Yeah, I've always found that fascinating! I wonder if it also explains why so many people don't overly much care about proper spelling. I mean, if people can understand you fine with even significant spelling mistakes, why spend the effort to learn the "official" way of writing words?

Because when I send you a message saying "shoot at any men who disagree", you need to be pretty certain that I didn't actually mean to type "shout" emoticon
