Lord of the Rings poll
Simple question: who is the lead character in The Lord of the Rings?
(You may answer with reference to the films but I'm really thinking about the book.)

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
That feels like a trick question.
Actually, there should be at least two, possibly three, because of the way the books (and the travels) are devided. How can someone be the lead character, if they are not present in a large part of the tale?
I would like to name Frodo (because he's the ringbearer and is the one entering Mordor), Gandalf (who gets the whole thing going and is the main advisor) and Aragorn (because he's indeed the leader of the group for quite some time, hunting for the missing hobbits, and of course, because he is the King).
I wouldn't like to leave either of the three out. Sam is not a lead, because he's generally painted to be Frodo's helper and because he's not one to think out plans.

It's been to long since I really read this, but you bring up some good points I think Firlefanz. There might not be a singular lead character in Lord of the Rings.

Does the ring itself qualify as a character? LOL

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
I agree with Firle.
Also, I'm still of the opinion that the proper way to end the story would have been for Sam to shove BOTH Frodo and Golom(sp?), along with the ring, into the volcano. Take care of a significant number of whiny, annoying characters AND save the world all at one time!!

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
If I'm right, Tolkien himself always considered Frodo to be the main character (despite his extended absences). The author's word is good enough for me!

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
Someone needs to write the "Shadow of the Ringbearer" story. Frankly, Sam is underappreciated

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
You know, I realize we were supposed to like and sympathize with Sam, but I always just found him annoying, myself. Then again, I found ALL the hobbits annoying. Sam was, at least, the least annoying of the four (five, if you include Bilbo).
What can I say? I've just never been a big Tolkien fan!

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
The lead character is obviously Gollum. He's the only one who ever leads anyone else, i.e. Frodo and Sam into Mordor.

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
It's called "Lord of the Rings" so obviously main character is Sauron, especially the part of him that is the Ring

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
Well, as far as the films are concerned, Peter Jackson has always said that it was a Frodo-centric movie(s). It's about Frodo's journey in taking the ring to Mordor to destroy it.
For myself, I would say Frodo and Aragorn are the leads because Aragorn goes through quite a character development from being a ranger from the north, to becoming the king he was born to be, even though he fought it for so long.

Re: Lord of the Rings poll
Yes, I agree, they both have characteristics of lead characters.
Aragorn is the leader of the group after Gandalf is lost, and after Frodo leaves for Mordor.
I was almost sad watching him become the King - in the movies, he loses some of his attraction, I think. (Love his rugged look in part 1.)
