First draft... DONE! :)

Today I finished the first draft of my autobiographical/semi-political rant memoir book thing. :P In essence it is the story of a period of my life, the people I met, the crazy stuff that happened along the way, interspersed with colour commentary. emoticon

I've been writing this on-the-sly, and only recently really started talking about it with people offline. It is a time in my life I don't talk about much, and has been a somewhat scarey thought opening up about it.

In some ways, writing an autobiographical piece is an almost arrogant process, but I am mainly writing it for the benefit of my family and friends, and whatever else might happen to/with it beyond that is secondary.

It's been almost 6 years in coming to the point where I could write about it with the kind of distance I needed where it no longer hurt. I started planning the book last year, and began writing it 3 months ago... Very proud to say that I called a halt to the first draft today at 81,816 words, which is the longest single piece I've ever written. I just never thought it would be a non-fiction book. emoticon

I couldn't have done it without my sponsors (various kinds of rum). :P

Wooh!

Well done, Stone!

It sounds like a good project. Glad it no longer hurts too much to talk about it.

Congrats, Stone! That's an impressively long project to get done in only three months! I guess you must have really been motivated to write about it, huh?

It is indeed an impressive achievment! I've never even attempted anything that length. (I also don't have a life exciting enough to make an autobiography -- I envy you emoticon )

Re: First draft... DONE! :)

Yeah, this was my biggest ever piece of writing (besides last year's nano novels which combined for over 100k, but were mostly over-written drivel if I'm honest). I'd kind of been sitting on it for about 6 years (give or take) and I'd slow-cooked my way into what I wanted to write about.

I've been waiting to start editing it until this weekend (5 days off, an empty house, a 10 point plan, heheh) (read: partial procrastination). The writing itself came in dribs and drabs at first (only once every few days) but by the last month I was regularly pushing out 3-5k days without much difficulty. I think allowing myself a day off now and then helped as well, I didn't have a deadline, and if I didn't write today, I knew I would probably write tomorrow, or definitely the day after. emoticon

In between finishing the draft, and starting editing, I've been getting excited about 2 novel projects. A long time fantasy novel series that needs a LOT of character and world development, and a kind of internet mystery/romance/thing that is almost ready to go.

Lots of fun things to do, other than sitting on my fanny and playing computer games instead of writing. (haw haw haw)

Haha! I understand the feeling! Congrats on avoiding it some nights and getting the writing going instead!
