Making Millions Through Kindle?

Well, admittedly, that million is a wild guess, but the fact remains that an independent author is selling hundreds of thousands of copies through Amazon's Kindle - and definitely making money that way:

This 26-Year-Old Is Making Millions Cutting Out Traditional Publishers With Amazon Kindle

Is that the way to go? Or just a one in a million piece of luck?

It makes a certain amount of sense that if you don't have to pay to phyiscally print the books, you should be able to sell them for cheaper and give a higher percentage of the earnings to the writer. Personally, I hate reading things on screen, be it a computer or a Kindle. But for people whose eyes don't bug out (and/or who don't spend the whole day on the computer at work), e-books seem like a really good idea.

It's certainly nice there is an alternative going for writers who don't have a publisher. emoticon

Yes, and looking at that big Borders collapse and the likely demise of a few big publishers, self-publishing like this becomes much more attractive all of a sudden.

You even get to keep the copyrights yourself, right?

I still like paper books, though. They don't irritate my eyes when I stare at them for hours on end. And they smell nice.

Just as a matter of interest, do the same people who buy 'real' books also prefer to buy music on CD (and wish you could still get vinyl), or are you happy to have mp3s?

I rather HAVE music on CD. I don't usually USE said CD (unless I take it in the car), but I like to have the physical item...

I tend to act as Loud G does, but I'm not against buying music online in mp3 format. As soon as I buy a CD, I rip it to my computer. But this way I've still got the hard copy, in case the machine crashes or something. (And the computer copy, in case I lose or damage the CD!)

Here's a very rational blog post by Amanda Hocking herself, the one the first article was gushing about. I think it's very informative and shows the work behind such a success:

Some Things That Need to Be Said

I have no experience with ebooks, so I can't really say whether I like them or not. I think it would be convenient to have ebooks, but I will always enjoy curling up with a real paper one.
