Good book
Well, it's not scifi/fantasy, but I just finished an excellent book and decided to tell you about it anyhow.
The name is "A Free Man of Color" by Barbara Hambly.
It's a mystery, but the reason it was so good was the setting. The main character is an educatied, free colored man, in New Orleans in about 1833. The book does a great job of showing a time period in US history which I knew existed, but hadn't read much about -- during the beginnings of the institution of slavery, but while not all black folk were slaves. Really an interesting read, and the end was a surprise, too.
