This, for the record, is precisely how I feel about my PhD research.

Comics

(Okay, so it's not XKCD. It's CLOSE.)

At the last major conference, I presented a poster. Apparently, one of the other researchers told my boss it was the most "honest and straight-forward" poster she'd ever seen. Mostly because I flatly stated that my group's results weren't any better than any other group's (and might be worse, though I couldn't prove that one way or the other, either).

He and I are still trying to figure out if that was a compliment or not...

Hmmmm, I guess the body language was ambiguous at the time then. Guess you'll never figure it out now any more. emoticon

Still... wouldn't within science those words typically be a compliment? emoticon

Well, we know it was PARTLY a compliment. But is it fully complimentary, or grudgingly so? Srinivas thought she sounded like she had to admire me for being truthful, while still being shocked and mildly disapproving for actually DOING it.

Ok, so ]today's xkcd really hurt my brain for a bit.

I was like, "[sign in to see URL], that's not how it works"

So I set out testing the theorem in various other ways.

My first attempt succeeded much to my chagrin (though looking back it should have been obvious (2x4))

The next couple of attempts failed fantastically as I predicted emoticon

Still, it was clever and made me do long division for the first time in ages emoticon

That sounds a little like when I (as it generally is me) call tech support at work.

I tell them there's a system error and they want the IP address of my computer. First of all I don't have my own computer (the idea that not everyone works at a desk is very confusing for some people). Second of all it's a system error, so someone needs to look at the server. Telling you about my computer will not help.

Fair enough the people on the switchboard aren't trained in library software. But we still have to call them first as the team that actually deals with libraries can only work on jobs that come via the switchboard.
I've learned that if it's anything more complicated than 'the system is down', I should send an email directly to the dedicated team and put the call through the switchboard as simply as possible.

Better than the infinite pigs!
Though, come to think of it, my sisters and dad and I used to sing "Infinity Bottles of Beer on the Wall" on long car trips... Mom was only very briefly amused.
