"The Amulet of Samarkand" - Jon Stroud

This is actually the first book of a series of three. (YA-fantasy, btw.) The main characters are a djinn called "Bartimaeus", and a boy called Nathaniel.

Now, Nathanial is a wizard and summons Bartimaeus to do a job for him. Unfortunately, that only leads both of them into deep trouble.

Aside from the story, this book is remarkable for its technique. The story is told from two different and very distinct perspectives. One is from Bartimaeus' POV and told in first person. The other is about Nathaniel, and told in third person omniscient. I would not have thought it's possible to carry through the entire story, but Stroud manages, and manages well.

And of course, the character of Bartimaeus would absolutely delight Jessie. He's a sarcastic, vengeful and arrogant demon, and yet... somewhat appealing.

Glad to read the good review emoticon

I've got the first two books at home and they were next on my list to read after the Wheel of Time.

It does start a little slow, I thought, but it's worth reading.
