Chapter finished

I just finished the first chapter of my new story!
I'm so glad cos I've been thinking ahead quite a bit with this one and can't wait to get to the next bits.

It's a pretty long one; 13 large Word pages, 11336 words.
Possibly that's a bit too long, a friend of mine tends to write shortish chapters of 4-6 large Word pages. It's odd I like to read short-medium chapters but I tend to write long ones. I can probably subdivide or summarise it later if need be.

The point is that I've finished the first stretch and I'm fairly happy with the results even if I have to re-edit/rewrite a bit later.

Yay, great work, Dragonlady!

I believe there is no optimal size for chapter length other than what is good for your story. If this chapter feels good to you, then it's just fine!

Glad you're writing again. emoticon

I like reading short chapters, myself but that's because I usually think of reading as a challenge. I want to fly through the book and short chapters (that are complete) help with that.

However, if a short chapter is incomplete, I would rather it were longer.

Thanks everyone. emoticon

I've been reading several short-chaptered books recently and I can see the advantages of it. But I don't write to a particular plan and I tend to write in long chunks.
That said this bit is just one afternoon but it's a busy one and introduces/starts a large part of the plot.

Yes Firle I've starting writing again now I'm working full time. Thought it'd be good to get it into my routine.

 Isn't this cute ----> emoticon

I think anything goes. Write from yourself. Don't write to anything.

When you revise, rewrite and all that, then you can figure out a goal. Just get the story down and dont' worry too much about form or fitting it into anything like that.

Thanks Hadaad, that's good advice and more or less what I'm trying to do at the moment.

I have friends who will read over what I've written as I go, that way I catch flaws, plot holes and (mostly) bad grammar.
But you're right the structure of the thing itself needn't be an issue until I've got more of the story down.

Hi Dragon!

Don't worry about the chapter size. I've got some chapters in my stories that are only 4-5 pages long, and others that are 20-30! It all depends on what's happening. As an old English teacher of mine said while refering to essays and writing in general: "Write until you're finished, and not one page more or less."

Good luck!
