Airs Beneath the Moon - Toby Bishop

Reviewing this book is a little difficult for me. I did enjoy reading it - in fact, I could hardly put it down because I wanted to know the ending. It's a fun read, and the basic concept of riding a winged horse speaks directly to my heart.

However - and it is a fairly big however - the tale follows a very worn plot: Farm girl bonds with a magical creature and is sent to a school full of superior girls to learn to work with it, ending up as the underdog. Of course, both girl and creature turn out to be unusually talented and find themselves at the center of a malicious plot. In addition, the main villain is a very stereotypical villain. He's mean, egoistical, brutal and obessed. There's not one good hair on him, and this is just the most annoying one. Very few characters even hint at shades of grey, they are either good (and well-spoken, honest and thoughtful), or bad (and envious, greedy and angry).

The author missed the opportunity to show more complex characters. It does take away from a plot with some clever twists, with very good action and some wonderfully devious scenes. This book could have been much so more.

Even so, I'm looking forward to the sequel that's coming out later this year. Maybe Toby Bishop improves. emoticon

I don't suppose the targeted audience might be a bit well read people? emoticon Just an idea, I wouldn't know cause I've never read anything from Bishop I think... Still, must be an exceptional writer in a way to want you to finish the book despite the stereotypes. emoticon
