planning

I've seen some ways for planning a story, but I'm curious. Other than the snowflake method, how do you plan your stories.

Re: planning

I mostly use a chapter outline - just a table of the chapters I want to do, with a sentence or two of content. One can do this with cards, too, which is more flexible.

This gives me a good idea of how a story is going to progress, how the plot lines advance and how the arc of tension works.

The Snowflake is fine for brainstorming, but I find that I give up on the more detailed parts.

Re: planning

First off, Hi. I'm back.

Sometimes, I plan a story kind of like closing in on something that's far away. I can see the whole thing in my mind, and I write about that a little (just some notes) and as I get closer, I can see some sketchy elements that I want in it (major turning points that are going to happen) then I close in and get an idea of the structure (world, political climates etc.) then I get as close as I can and see the characters. By then, the rest of it has resolved itself in my mind and I start writing.

The rest of the time, I just start writing. I figure if I make it more than a couple of pages in, it's time to take a break and see where this story is leading. Then I either plan or scrap. (Sadly, usually scrap)

Welcome back, hadaad.

Your method actually sounds similar to the snowflake - going from broad outline to fine detail. Still, I like the way you describe it, as it's closer to an actual writing experience.
