So does that mean your subconscious is creating bad sentences so you'll find errors in your writing?

I spent a lot of time in editing yesterday working on a 2,500-word section. I don't know why I did it since it knocked out my morning "writers mode" session and almost took away my nightly session as well! The "command conflict" scene is one I barreled through without too much thought, and it shows. I cleaned up what I could see, but I am betting I revisit this spot when the "beta readers" get ahold of the story.

Put a marker into the text - that'll make it easier for you to remember to revisit that spot. (I write notes to myself into the text all the time.)

I like using the 'tracker' function sometimes. It comes in handy every now and again.

Today I finished my first edit of the February 2017 posting. Welll... almost. I still need to change that info-dump into a conversation or something. I may do it in the morning or wait until the second round.

eye-opener...

I ran into a "grief/pity" scene this morning. Thanks to some feedback I changed a portion of the scene to an insight into the characters thoughts. This type of change is something I would never have considered a year ago. I'm getting better. I wonder what I will be doing a year from now without thinking about it?

You will do cool things. emoticon

Growth as a writer happens by writing (and sometimes by reading, but you have to be a writer to "see" what the author is doing).

Still sick, still editing, slowly...
I passed the 40% mark in my first round of editing today. Now I think I'll go back to bed.

I made it through another 1,100 words on editing today. I split off some descriptive phrases and turned them into dialogue. All three of my software packages agree that the net result is better than the old, but none of them agree with why!

I am in my "dance scene" now. I am styling the scene on some Medieval circle dance routines for groups that I learned decades ago when I was the Principal Herald of the Kingdom of Ansteorra in the SCA. James is a much better dancer than I ever was. emoticon

mixed bag...

Three kinds of editing?!?

My first round was simple, and I was able to do most of it while writing my first draft. Periods and commas and semi-colons.

This second round of story editing is harder than the first. I am cleaning-up and smoothing-out the different story scenes to make them easier to read.

The third round which Trying has been helping me with is the hardest. Holding the proper pov and tense while telling the story.

That third part will get much, much easier the more you write. It will become second nature to stick to your PoV and tense.

*hugs*

The fourth level is to polish the way the story flows from excitement to easing of tension while growing the tension throughout the entire tale.

That's advanced stuff. emoticon

I hope so. I can see signs of this in my other two WIP's, but I have a way to go before I am happy about my "first drafts."

Word choices are getting better with practice. It's wild to see how many ways you can say something with different word selections. emoticon

I finished my second round of editing for the March 2017 posting of First Transit. There are spots I will have to revisit because I am not happy with them as they currently sit.

I did like a couple of spots where I changed "telling" to "showing" and the increase in dialogue. The funny thing about that series of changes, the conversation increased, yet the total word count declined by five words!

Onward to April! emoticon

Fun thing when you have someone else following you! emoticon

I am still in my "April post" with my first round edits, and Trying is plodding through my "November post."

So when I fix mistakes in one part of the novel Trying is pointing out story flow, viewpoint, and show-tell problems I overlooked or had not considered.

This process is fantastic because the dual approach keeps the story fresh in my mind and the puzzles of how to fix things to make my novel better helps to prevent me from falling into the "I'm sick of this" trap I hear other writers fall into when editing.

puzzling process!

Today I ran into a spot in my "First Transit" novel where Leonard knows things he hasn't been told or figured out yet!

So I spent time going back over the area to see how to solve that problem. Most of it was easy, but there is one spot that was a real challenge. I'll most likely end up editing that area again later.

Today I tried something different. For my first hour, I edited "First Transit" and added 42 words in dialogue to the novel. Then I shifted to coding and made a few declaration changes on one of Josh's skins.

Unusual process. My new schedule idea allowed me to edit 23 paragraphs in "First Transit" this morning. I added dialogue, cleaned up a few descriptions and broke long several sentences into shorter ones to improve readability. All of which is a good thing yet only the Hemingway app acknowledges the improvements and corrections! AutoCrit shows the new totals but then downticks my overall score without giving me a clue on why.

Despite the unusual and conflicting results, I am pleased with my efforts. emoticon

The free version doesn't give any hint on why it down ticked the revisions. It does show the improvements so what I am seeing is probably something you get access to when you subscribe to their service. emoticon

And now for the ultimate "buy me to find out" rating using autocrit.

Incursion has 790 words thus far and rates at 88.28
The story has zero slow paragraphs, zero long sentences, and zero unnecessary "filler words."

So with zero apparent mistakes what could be the problem(s) that keep my story from rating 100 percent? emoticon

Odd thing. (May 15, 2018 - 57.67 percent done in first round editing)

Some days it feels like I am making no progress. Then the beauty of using the message board comes into play as a gentle encouragement and validation. Despite how it might feel I was able to place my second asterisk on the "April Posting" today which says I have gone over another 7500+ words in my first novel. emoticon
