Ah. Well, knowing people who have died can change one's outlook at death, I'd say.
But of course, it does depend on your character.
The time it really hit me was when a friend of us died who was in school with my brother... sudden cardiac arrest with 42. That was a bit of a shock. Kinda punches home that none of us is immortal.

I forgot to name one of my villains and had to go back to where she first appeared (December's Post) and fixed that minor detail. Then I had to check the other months to make certain to name her each time she showed up. Along the way, I discovered two characters I forgot to put in my "story bible!"

Yay for fixing that!
And yes, it's smart to fix it the moment you figured it out. It's much, much harder to remember these things or keep a list or fix it later in an editing pass.
This fits very well with the "do not rewrite" rule, btw.

I looked at it and was trying to throw the blame for the latest sabotage on a different character, but it just didn't fit the man, and it did fit the woman with no name. The cool part of fixing that mistake was adding in a few words that fleshed out not just the woman's character but the characters of three others as well!

I discovered a boo-boo I made in my story today (changing ranks and the spelling of Jerry Clarke's last name). That took awhile to sort out, but I figured it was better to fix it now instead of maybe forgetting it when I start my "reading edit" later on.

As I get closer to the end of my first novel I am paying more attention my "story bible." The editing now is to clarify entries that may be confusing.

My first major edit is coming soon. The "bubble transit drive" will become not just a computer program but a piece of equipment as well. That means changes in a lot of spots and gives the opportunity for one of my "in passing characters" to grow into something more.

I am slowly "weeding out" references to "warp" and replacing it with "transit" to better describe what my interstellar drive system does. It is astonishing just how ingrained Star Trek's term has become to describe FTL travel. I was using the term without even thinking about it!

I like it.
And yes, Star Trek (and to a less extent Star Wars) has certainly dominated "expressions" about space travel. I suppose that's how language grows and adapts to new concepts.
It's good to become aware of that and shift it.

Re: Editing is such a...
Game changer!
Filler words, adjectives, and adverbs. It is funny how those terms used to bother me and now they are friends of my mind. I made this discovery yesterday (I think) when I did a search for the filler word "just."
My plan at the time was to eliminate that one word while thinking about my story and what I was going to write in its progression towards a completed "first draft."
The search took me to a spot in what has to be the first chapter where James is watching two people as they float by him and is kind of droll and moody when it is just James thinking about where he is.
I changed the scene to get rid of that "nasty filler word" and brought James into an action sequence and conversation between Tobias and him. The moodiness and drollness vanished and now the same information is presented while introducing another of my stories characters to the reader! I couldn't believe the difference in how the scene stayed the same but at the same time changed from the melancholy to a wonderful read as I passed the signpost given to me by my new friend, the "filler word."

Unexpected process!
Don't ask me why but for some reason I was under the impression that editing meant chopping. And for some reason that equated with boring. It isn't either of those so far when it comes to my novel. According to autocritic.com my novel scores 88.32, I have no idea if that is good or bad but I am having fun when editing. I wish I was faster at it though...

It's good you're having fun. I have no idea what that score means.
Most of all, editing is about making it even smoother and more precise.

This morning I decided to edit my "Story Bible" for the "Transit" series (I still find it hard to believe I am writing a second book). The "bible" is now sorted into categories to make things easier to find.

I found another chapter break in "First Transit." Then edited three scenes to include dialogue instead of simple event descriptions. And for grins and giggles, I looked at autocrit.com where I discovered my score has gone from 87.92 to 88.52 (the higher the number the better according to them). I must be a genius! Hunger Games only has a score of 80.47!!!

I made so many small edits to "First Transit" I lost track! I have marked the start of 9 chapters now.

I have found the starting point for 16 chapters now.
Edited a scene where Leonard is "Captain for a day."
Edited several scenes where Thomas was called Lieutenant after he had been promoted to Lieutenant Commander.

I finished finding the chapter breaks before going to work. Now for a detailed reading round to see what I can spot using Hemingway as a guide.

I cleaned up a few scenes in "First Transit" chapter 1 before going to work today. Hemingway says I have too many "long" sentences, so I am looking at those to see if they are too long or too complicated.

Not sure Hemmingway is always giving good advice. But if you're just using to check on sentences and then use your own judgement, it should be fine.
Yay for editing!
